ABOUT THE COURSE:Environmental Contaminants and Risk to Food Safety is one of the relevant topics to be included on SWAYAM portal as Environmental contaminants are chemical and biological agents having growing concern about their potential effect on food safety and human health. The fact about their sources, fate and toxicology have not yet been available collectively in any of study material. These contaminants include rare earth elements, heavy metals, pesticides, biological agents and emerging pollutant such aspharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, hormones, pesticides, personal care products nanomaterials, and microplastics. Now, with the changes in agricultural practices, technological advancements, environmental pollution, and shifts in consumer behavior, these environmental contaminants have been found in many daily products and in the food chain. Their accumulation in our daily food may be responsible for increasing risks to human health leading to several disorders like cancer, hormonal disruptions, neurological effects, antibiotic resistance carcinogenic effects and other fatal diseases. So, the modules of this course will provide in-depth knowledge about sources, types and effect of environmental contaminants and their risk to food safety and also the remediation approach to the students. They can use this information for further industrial training program or for their academic excellence.
