This specialization provides a structured learning journey through the foundational theories, methodological approaches, and practical applications of human-machine communication. The first course in the path, Foundations and Theories of Human-Machine Communication, establishes the interdisciplinary roots of the field, covering its origins, conceptual frameworks, and evolving paradigms. The next stage, Methods, Ethics, and Social Dimensions in Human-Machine Communication, deepens the learner's understanding by exploring research methodologies, ethical considerations, and the broader societal implications of HMC. The final course, Applications and Future Directions of Human-Machine Communication, bridges theory and practice by analyzing real-world implementations across diverse domains, from education to healthcare, and exploring the challenges and possibilities of emerging technologies. Together, these courses offer a comprehensive pathway for learners to develop a critical, applied, and forward-thinking perspective on the intersection of humans and machines in communication.
This specialization is based on the course, The Sage Handbook of Human–Machine Communication, by Andrea L. Guzman, Rhonda McEwen and Steve Jones.

Delve into the origins, core concepts, and interdisciplinary foundations of human-machine communication, exploring how humans and machines interact, collaborate, and shape each other's agency. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical and historical underpinnings of communication between people and intelligent technologies. This course examines the evolution and theoretical frameworks of human-machine communication, drawing from communication studies, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and media theory. Learners will explore the history of HMC, the role of agency, the impact of AI and robotics, and the emergence of new paradigms in human-technology relations. By the end of the course, learners will understand the foundational concepts and interdisciplinary approaches that define the field, preparing them to critically analyze and engage with the complexities of human-machine interactions. Through a blend of expert-led readings, engaging video lectures, and knowledge checks, learners will build a strong conceptual foundation in human-machine communication. The course emphasizes critical thinking and interdisciplinary connections to help learners synthesize diverse perspectives. This course is part one of a three-course Specialization designed to build a complete and cohesive understanding of the subject. While it offers valuable skills on its own, you'll gain the most benefit by progressing through all three courses as a structured learning journey. Explore the research methodologies, ethical considerations, and social issues that shape the study and practice of human-machine communication. This course equips learners with the tools to critically investigate and understand the societal impact of communication technologies. This course covers a wide range of methodological approaches for studying human-machine communication, including experimental, ethnographic, visual, and interview-based methods. Learners will examine ethical frameworks, feminist and postcolonial perspectives, and the challenges of privacy, datafication, and intersectionality in HMC. The course also addresses the implications of AI, automation, and labor, as well as the influence of algorithms and bot-to-bot communication. By completing this course, learners will be able to assess research strategies, navigate ethical dilemmas, and analyze the broader social context of human-machine interactions. Learners will engage with diverse research methods and critical perspectives through structured readings, video content, and quizzes designed to foster analytical skills and ethical awareness. The course encourages reflection on the societal and cultural dimensions of technology-mediated communication. This course is part two of a three-course Specialization designed to build a complete and cohesive understanding of the subject. While it offers valuable skills on its own, you'll gain the most benefit by progressing through all three courses as a structured learning journey.
