Practical JavaScript: From Scratch to React provides a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to modern web development using JavaScript and related technologies. Beginning with foundational skills in HTML, CSS, and introductory JavaScript, you will progressively build the knowledge needed to create dynamic, responsive, and full-stack web applications.
Along the way, you will explore Document Object Model manipulation, asynchronous programming, working with APIs, animations, server-side development, real-time multi-user applications, accessibility, and modern front-end development with React, the industry-standard user interface library.
Designed for learners seeking practical, foundational experience, this course series prepares you to step into the role of a systems architect, rather than a simple contributor. By the end, you will be prepared to design, develop, and deploy accessible, interactive web applications that span both the browser and the server.
Syllabus
- Course 1: Web Development Fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Course 2: Building Interactive Web Applications with JavaScript
- Course 3: Developing Full-Stack Applications with JavaScript
- Course 4: Building Applications with React
Courses
-
Static page logic and complex state updates can make modern web development slow and tedious. In “Building Applications with React,” you bridge the gap to professional software engineering by mastering React, the industry-standard user interface library. You learn to break down complex layouts into reusable components, declaratively manage application state, and seamlessly handle dynamic user events. You’ll also build a single-page application with modern routing and deploy it to a public static hosting service to showcase your ready-to-work developer skills. By exploring the power of custom Hooks and side effects, you will confidently fetch remote data and preserve application flow. This is the fourth and final course in a four-part series, “Practical JavaScript: From Scratch to React,” that provides you with hands-on experience in creating seamless front- and back-end applications.

Static webpages limit your ability to engage your users on a deeper level. In "Building Interactive Web Applications," you’ll elevate your engineering skills by learning to build highly responsive, dynamic web applications. Designed for developers who are comfortable with basic HTML, CSS, and introductory programming, this course emphasizes dynamic user interactions, asynchronous operations, and the architectural patterns that power modern web applications. Through hands-on exercises and examples, you’ll learn how to write interactive JavaScript code, manipulate the Document Object Model (DOM), handle events, and work with asynchronous data using Promises. You’ll also explore how JavaScript is used to build responsive user interfaces, animations, and custom visualizations using technologies like Canvas and SVG. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to build richer, more interactive web experiences and be prepared for more advanced front-end development. This is the second course in a four-part series, “Practical JavaScript: From Scratch to React,” that provides you with hands-on experience in creating seamless front- and back-end applications.
-
“Developing Full-Stack Applications” focuses on advanced JavaScript concepts to build modern, scalable, and collaborative applications. You will move beyond client-only development to learn how to integrate external libraries, manage project dependencies, and build server-side applications with Node.js. You’ll be introduced to building real-time multi-user applications, with an emphasis on critical cross-cutting concerns such as accessibility (a11y) and internationalization (i18n). Through hands-on projects, you will gain the skills to design interactive, collaborative, inclusive, and usable applications. This is the third course in a four-part series, “Practical JavaScript: From Scratch to React,” that provides you with hands-on experience in creating seamless front- and back-end applications.

Full-stack development means understanding both the backend and front-end needs for your client or organization. “Web Development Fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript” provides the basic building blocks for creating sleek, interactive web applications. The course begins with the fundamentals of HTML, where you’ll learn to define the content of a webpage. You’ll then move to CSS — helping your browser render the content you’ve coded. By watching the course videos, reading the interactive textbook, and completing the assignments, you will learn how to deploy accessible, functional, and personalized web applications with limited interactivity. This will also lay the groundwork for a deeper understanding of JavaScript in the courses that follow. This is the first course in a four-part series, “Practical JavaScript: From Scratch to React,” that provides you with hands-on experience in creating seamless front- and back-end applications.
