Nursing Preceptor Education

MGH Institute of Health Professions via edX Professional Certificate

Overview

Welcome to the Nursing Preceptor Education Program (NPEP), founded by Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine (Lunder-Dineen) a division of the he Peter L. Slavin, MD Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care (Slavin Academy) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Lunder-Dineen was established to provide education to health care professionals tailored to address critical public health and workforce issues. In 2015, Lunder-Dineen led by a statewide Advisory Team of nurse leaders across Maine and MGH established the original program titled the Maine Nursing Preceptor Education Program, as a solution to the paucity of formally trained nurse preceptors in Maine. Its overarching goal is to advance and support the recruitment, integration, satisfaction, and retention of nursing students, new nurses, and transitioning nurses across the continuum of care

The demand for preceptor education is not unique to Maine. In 2023, with the support of MGH Institute of Health Professions School of Nursing (MGH IHP SoN), as co-sponsors, the blended learning program was redesigned with dynamic and intuitive online modules and interactive synchronous workshop sessions. These enhancements were meticulously incorporated to reflect the multifaceted roles of nurse preceptors. A major resource for course planning has been the seminal work of Beth Ulrich, EdD, RN, FACHE, FAONL, FAAN. Ulrich's book, Mastering Precepting (2023), serves as a cornerstone resource for nurse preceptors seeking to expand their expertise in the precepting role. The program is structured with 7 asynchronous modules with an estimated time to complete of ~8 hours and 2 half-day live virtual workshops (~8 hours).

Today, Lunder-Dineen, the Slavin Academy and the IHP SoN, with support from MGH Nursing and Patient Care Services, are proud to offer the asynchronous portion of this course in an on-demand format, via this featured course on EdX with continuing education credit for nurses across the globe provided through the MGH IHP SoN. Following completion of the modules you may be eligible to enroll in the live virtual workshops typically held 1-2 times per year. At the end of this course, you will find more details regarding the workshop and enrollment process.
