Spatial Data Science: The New Frontier in Analytics

This course is an overview of some of the endless number of tools offered by ArcGIS.
The course includes weekly short videos and one or two practical exercises on ArcGIS. The video lessons are really... gentle. They don't include technical details or math but introduce the concept and the algorithms on an abstract level (e.g they don't dive into K-means but describe what is clustering).

The real value of the course lies on the practical exercises. The course offers students a license for the ArcGIS Desktop App for the duration of the course to complete them.
In the exercises, there are some real scenarios where you have to use some tools within ArcGIS to complete a task. It's obvious that there has been some serious effort regarding the course material and I would recommend the course even just for the exercises.

Overall, I suppose that the goal of the course was a gentle introduction to the various aspects of ArcGIS and as such it does a great job (even though I would like some in-depth, more technical approach) .

The course is one of the best course that i have done. It includes videos which are very concise, insightful and entertaining. The exercise steps are very easy to follow avoiding ambiguity. The additional exercise (or called stretch goals in the course) are challenging which makes good use of the discussion form and make the course all the more interactive. The concepts, skills and tools that i learned through the course can be applicable in actual projects.
Section 1 covers the topic of Data Engineering and Data visualization .The tool used for this section exercise are ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS notebook( python).
Section 2 covers the topic of Predictive analysis and Forest based classification and Regression. The exercise consist of creating a prediction model using ArcGIS Pro.
Section 3 covers the topic of Suitability modeling in data science. The exercise consist of creating a suitability model using ArcGIS Pro and bridging with R .
Section 4 covers the important topic of Pattern Detection and Clustering. The exercise consist of Detecting patterns using Hotspot Analysis and Outlier analysis which can be done both in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS notebook (python).
Section 5 covers one of the most discussed topic Neural Network and Deep Learning. The exercise consist of using an object detection model which can be done both in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS notebook (python).
Section 6 covers concept of communicating results. The exercise consist of creating a story using ArcGIS Storymaps.
The course will help us gain skills by learning to use new tools. It will also aid to your knowledge of Statistics. I would definitely recommend it to everyone involved in projects/researches related to location based analysis and who are interested in data science.

Excellent opportunity to delve into detail on data preparation and analysis for spatial data science projects -- including video explanations of various machine learning and deep learning algorithms with spatial components + learn about space-time cubes and 3-D visualizations and animations, culminating in a final project that shows you how to communicate your spatial analytic findings to information consumers online using ArcGIS StoryMaps. All exercises have detailed instructions and can be completed using the provided login credentials to the desktop and online software applications provided by Esri. Course participants participate in discussion forums to share maps created and to troubleshoot technical issues other students need assistance with, while course instructors moderate and provide insights and motivation to attendees throughout the course.

I didn’t know about Data Engineering in ArcGIS, and I found it to be a very useful tool for optimizing data before performing any analysis. The Prediction Model was also new to me, and I found it quite a helpful tool when working with quantitative information. The Suitability Model section was my favorite — I used to follow the same process by converting the values of each input into a generalized scale and then using the Raster Calculator, but using the tool made the process much easier and smoother. The Pattern Detection section provided top-notch knowledge, allowing me to learn how to train models to automate object detection, so I’m really thankful for that.Regarding StoryMaps, I already knew a little about this tool; however, I totally agree with Lauren when she said that the hardest part is creating an engaging story to tell.

Although I am currently unemployed, I’ve been making the most of this time by learning new GIS tools, and this MOOC has been perfect for that. I’d like to thank the Esri team for offering it to the GIS community — I found it very helpful and full of new content for me, and I’m really glad I completed it.

The Spatial Data Science: The New Frontier in Analytics MOOC from ESRI Academy was a valuable introduction to the field when I began my MS in Business Analytics a year ago. What's truly notable is how much my appreciation for the course grew after completing later modules, such as Data Visualization and Storytelling, Prescriptive Analytics for Managerial Decision-Making, and Data Mining. These courses provided the essential context and analytical framework that made the spatial concepts click into place. I particularly found the section on spatial-temporal analysis fascinating, as it helped me explore the identification of significant patterns and trends across both 'where' and 'when'. The MOOC effectively introduced foundational geographic principles, such as the idea that near things are more related than distant things, and established a pragmatic perspective on modeling: that while models may have limitations, their utility for decision-making is undeniable.

Over the past six weeks, I gained an in-depth understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), particularly through hands-on experience with ArcGIS software. One of the most memorable concepts was how powerful GIS can be in analyzing and visualizing spatial data. I learned how to harness the full potential of ArcGIS, from creating complex spatial models to using advanced tools for geospatial analysis. What I enjoyed most about this course was the opportunity to learn about and apply a variety of spatial analysis techniques. I found it really engaging to work through real-world problems and use tools like ModelBuilder, ArcGIS Notebooks, and StoryMaps to explore data, build models, and communicate my findings.
