This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is for people who know something about data analysis and want to learn about the special capabilities of spatial data analysis. Query a layer and sum attributes to make a map showing the best locations for new mixed-use development.Section 3Determining How Places Are RelatedLearn about vector overlay, the modifiable areal unit problem, and normalizing data for choropleth mapping. Use ArcGIS Online to analyze watersheds for water quality monitoring, and summarize the number of streetlights in a city’s maintenance assessment district.Section 4Finding the Best Locations and PathsDiscuss topology, site suitability, cost paths, and other key concepts. Find suitable sites for a grocery distribution center and preferable areas for cougar habitat using ArcGIS Online.Section 5Detecting and Quantifying PatternsLecture topics include density surfaces, spatial autocorrelation, and spatiotemporal analysis. Use density and hot spot analyses to visualize patterns of personal and property crimes.Section 6Making PredictionsLearn about spatial interaction, regression, surface analysis, and interpolation. Use ArcGIS Online to interpolate sample points and make a map showing areas at risk of long-term poor air quality.

In the fields of social and health sciences, the spatial analysis techniques introduced in this course are already being used in research published in the peer-reviewed literature. This course gives course participants insights on how to ask good study questions, assemble the needed spatial data, and not only visualize but analyze the data using Esri software. I recommend the course even if, like me, you have several years of experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, as you will inevitably be reminded of important analytic steps and new use cases for spatial analysis to inspire your own work.

This is a great course for anyone interested in GIS and the ways it's used. I had no experience with GIS beforehand, but the videos at the start of each week and the step by step instructions throughout the tasks make it really easy to follow along. It was fun to explore a new program and think about how I could use GIS to analyze data in my own work. It was a bit tricky technically at times because I would use a split screen to have the instructions and the program open at the same time which sometimes made the map portion difficult to see, but it wasn't too difficult to go back and forth. I didn't need to use the forum too much, but it was nice to see the instructors and fellow students responding to questions. I've already signed up for another MOOC from esri and I'm looking forward to learning more.

Most Required Course if you want to blend in with Spatial Data. One concept from this course that I found especially useful is regression analysis in spatial analysis. It helps explain how a particular variable is influenced by one or more factors across geographic space. Understanding these relationships can reveal patterns that are not immediately visible on a map. In a future project, I could apply regression analysis to study how factors such as population density, road accessibility, and land use influence urban growth. This would help identify key drivers of development and support better planning decisions. Learning this method has strengthened my ability to analyze spatial data and draw meaningful conclusions from GIS datasets.

I greatly recommend the Going Places with Spatial Analysis MOOC for beginners and people who want to refresh on their ArcGIS foundations while learning GIS on a new platform. What I enjoyed most about this MOOC was the practical component, which allowed me to immediately apply the theoretical concepts I was learning. Working directly with maps, data, and spatial analysis tools helped me better understand concepts such as classification, proximity, modeling, and spatial patterns. However, I truly appreciated the entire course, as each topic contributed to building a more integrated and critical understanding of spatial analysis and the use of GIS in solving real-world problems.

This course is a great way to learn Spatial Analysis. The exercises are based on real-world data and the tools like Hot Spot Analysis are very powerful. This is a great self-paced course for all that use GIS or would like to learn GIS. You are given 6 weeks to complete the course. The exercises have guides and examples to help you through out the course. Links to reference information is also provided in case you want to expand your knowledge. A great way to expand your knowledge and the use of GIS application.

The course is amazing. It includes new exercises compared to the old ones. I can learn something new from it every time.

The only downside is that the material is too wordy. There are too many long sentences that could be more concise.

Wow! I really enjoyed this course very well, it opened my eyes to many capabilities of the of ArcGIS online platform and to understand how user-friendly and quick completion of any analysis whatsoever. I think I'm starting to love the Cloud-Based platform as to compare to the tedious stress with the Local-Based Software.

One of the best parts of the course was the hands-on experience with real-world spatial analysis workflows. The exercises were engaging, allowing me to apply different techniques and see how spatial relationships impact decision-making. The short, informative videos kept things interesting and made learning easy to follow.

The course was accessible for beginners but still valuable for those with GIS experience. The variety of tools I got to use made the learning process even better.

One way to improve the MOOC would be to introduce more diverse tool applications, allowing learners to explore different GIS software. Adding more real-world case studies could also make it even more practical by showing how spatial analysis is used in different industries.

I had a really great time in this course! It's a 6-week MOOC about learning to use Spatial Analysis, specifically in ArcGIS Online using a MOOC-specific login and credits.

Each week a new section opens, with a different emphasis and a new exercise or two. Each week has a discussion prompt that everyone submits one forum post to talk about, and those are a joy to read.

There are no weekly deadlines, just that all the work has to be done by the end of the course (and an extra, 7th week is given for that).

I came to this with decent experience in ArcGIS Pro and none in AGOL, and I learned a lot about AGOL as well as some things I can apply in ArcGIS Pro as well!

I recently completed the "Going Places with Spatial Analysis" course, and I can confidently say it was an insightful and engaging experience. As someone who was looking to enhance my skills in spatial analysis, this course exceeded my expectations and opened my eyes to the many possibilities of spatial analysis.

The course does a fantastic job of introducing the core concepts of spatial data, and the practical applications of these techniques were presented clearly. From understanding the basics of spatial patterns to diving into more advanced methods like spatial autocorrelation and regression analysis, the content was well-balanced and paced. I especially appreciated the focus on real-world scenarios—such as urban planning, environmental management, and transportation—that gave the course a very practical, hands-on feel.
