Welcome to the Ethics of AI!

The Ethics of AI is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki. The course is for anyone who is interested in the ethical aspects of AI – we want to encourage people to learn what AI ethics means, what can and can’t be done to develop AI in an ethically sustainable way, and how to start thinking about AI from an ethical point of view.

In this course you'll...

  • Discover why AI raises concerns about its ethically acceptable use and development.
  • Become familiar with the ethical questions and concepts related to contemporary AI.
  • Learn how to combine ethical concepts and theories with AI by doing practical exercises.

AI is becoming ever more relevant

Artificial intelligence is already a part of our daily lives. When we post pictures to social media, search online or ask questions from chatbots, we’re interacting with AI. Authorities, such as cities, rely on AI for providing public services. And governments are seeking solutions to global problems by using algorithmically produced knowledge. The goal of this course is to help you to develop your own skills for ethical thinking. You can complete the course at your own pace.

This is a very approachable and robust course with dense but digestible concepts. I appreciated the format of the course with peer reviews. My only complaint is that many of the essays were obviously generated by ChatGPT. Of course, this is an ongoing issue in universities. When encountered in peer view, they were flagged as spam (a good feature in this course). I did this course on the weekends, and it gave me a great deal of 'food for thought'. I am looking at the other courses offered through MOOC now. I would definitely recommend this course as a beginner or beyond, to anyone who is genuinely interested in Ethical AI.

This certificate program was both very informative and highly educational. The content was well-structured, clear, and practical, allowing me to gain hands-on experience with each topic. I learned a great deal from every module, and the explanations were easy to follow, even for complex concepts. The program not only broadened my horizons but also provided knowledge that I can directly apply in real-life situations. Completing it feels like a valuable addition to my CV and professional development. I truly appreciated the quality of the materials and instruction, and I am eager to enroll in other programs offered by the same platform.
