This beginner specialization teaches you to break down any subject into simple shapes, then build on that foundation with accurate proportions, dynamic shape design, and flowing rhythms. Through guided projects, step-by-step demos, and real student critiques, you'll practice drawing animal portraits, faces, and full figures with more confidence and life. You'll also learn from guest artists Aaron Blaise and Mike Mattesi on how professionals use shapes in animation and illustration.

In this course you'll learn why some shapes feel alive and others feel dead, and what to actually do about it. You'll work through the ingredients one at a time, so breaking symmetry, shifting the peaks of a curve, building tension against a relaxed curve, mixing straights in with your curves, and stacking complexity on one side to create a focal point. You'll learn to angle a shape off vertical so it feels like it's falling or flowing, and to arrange the smaller shapes so they support the gesture instead of fighting it. You'll also learn where to stop, because a shape pushed too far stops reading as the thing it's supposed to be.

In this course you'll learn to nail proportions from reference, using both measuring and your own trained eye. You'll learn comparative measuring with nothing but a pencil, so sighting, plumb lines, angles, units and negative shapes, which means you can draw accurately anywhere without hauling around a bag of gadgets. You'll learn to work big to small, starting with the shapes that decide your whole composition before you touch a single detail, and to see what's actually in front of you instead of the idea of an eye or a nose that's already sitting in your head. The part that matters most is the feedback loop. You'll see how to overlay your drawing on the reference in Photoshop and check your own accuracy in about a minute. You stop waiting around for an instructor to tell you what's off. You just see it. Students get reference photos, a full portrait demo from first mark to finish, a second demo where I trust my eyeballs and only measure to double check, and critiques of real student work.

In this course you'll learn to capture any pose from any angle using rhythms, the flowing lines that connect the body parts into one unified idea instead of a pile of disconnected pieces. You'll break the head, neck, shoulders, torso, legs, arms, hands and feet down into their simplest rhythms, from the front, the back, the side, and the awkward in between angles that usually stop you cold. You'll learn to balance gesture with structure so your figures feel alive without turning into noodle people, and to place your lines with intention so proportions hold up even when you're drawing fast. It's built around practice, not theory. You get example poses to draw from, rhythm templates to fall back on, demos at two difficulty levels, and honest critiques of real student work, so you can watch the mistakes you're making get fixed on the page.

Learn the fundamental skills to deconstruct complex subjects and build a strong foundation for your drawing practice. You’ll learn to break down the world into basic shapes, focusing on two key pillars: shape accuracy to capture precise proportions, and shape design to create appealing forms. We’ll cover essential warm-up exercises to improve your motor control, and guide you through simplifying animal portraits into manageable forms using a strict maximum of ten shapes. By mastering these techniques, you'll train your eyes to see the underlying structure of any subject rather than getting bogged down in details. You will learn to push and pull organic shapes, experiment with proportions, and develop dynamic shape language that applies to both realistic and stylized art. What makes this course unique is its hands-on approach, including step-by-step demonstrations, real student critiques, and a special bonus lesson from master creature designer and animator Aaron Blaise, who reveals how he uses these exact techniques in professional animation. Whether you're a beginner wanting solid fundamentals or an experienced artist streamlining your process, this course will transform how you see and draw.
