In this course you'll learn to nail proportions from reference, using both measuring and your own trained eye. You'll learn comparative measuring with nothing but a pencil, so sighting, plumb lines, angles, units and negative shapes, which means you can draw accurately anywhere without hauling around a bag of gadgets. You'll learn to work big to small, starting with the shapes that decide your whole composition before you touch a single detail, and to see what's actually in front of you instead of the idea of an eye or a nose that's already sitting in your head. The part that matters most is the feedback loop. You'll see how to overlay your drawing on the reference in Photoshop and check your own accuracy in about a minute. You stop waiting around for an instructor to tell you what's off. You just see it. Students get reference photos, a full portrait demo from first mark to finish, a second demo where I trust my eyeballs and only measure to double check, and critiques of real student work.

Syllabus

  • How to Draw Accurate Proportions
    • In this lesson, I’ll show you how you can train your mind to improve the accuracy in your drawings, measuring methods you can use along the way, and most importantly how you can give yourself quick feedback so you can improve faster.
  • Demo - Measure Proportions
    • Learn how to measure and compare facial proportions using reliable units, alignments, plumb lines, and landmark relationships. Through a detailed portrait demonstration, you’ll practice placing the major shapes accurately, judging angles, checking your measurements, and gradually developing the eye to draw with greater confidence and precision
  • Demo - Eyeballing Proportions
    • As you develop your eyes to judge proportions, you won't need to measure as much. In this bonus measuring demo, I’m going to rely a little less on the measuring and more on just trusting my eyeballs.
  • Critique - Measure Proportions
    • Let's take a look at some measuring proportions projects! I'll review your submissions and recommend some ways to improve your measuring approaches.
