This module covers the foundational practices and technologies that help organizations manage their data effectively. You'll start with data governance: the frameworks organizations use to address common data management challenges, including quality, consistency, and accountability. You'll then examine the relational database — the most widely used approach to organizing and storing information — and weigh its advantages and limitations. The module closes with how relational databases actually work: how data is queried to answer business questions, how entity-relationship modeling shapes database design, and how normalization and joins keep data clean and connected. Big Data, Data Warehouses, and Knowledge Management

The volume of information organizations generate has grown beyond what traditional databases alone can handle. This module examines three approaches organizations use to manage and extract value from large and complex information environments. You'll start with Big Data, including what it is, what makes it distinct, and the characteristics that define it. You'll then look at data warehouses and data marts: how they're structured, what's required to implement and maintain them, and how they support decision-making by bringing together information from across the enterprise. The module closes with knowledge management, the practices organizations use to capture, share, and apply not just structured information but the expertise that exists within their people and processes. You'll examine both the benefits and the real challenges of implementing knowledge management systems.
