SUNY SimAcademy: Professional Development for Healthcare Simulation prepares healthcare simulation educators to design, facilitate, debrief, evaluate, and manage high-quality simulation-based learning experiences across healthcare disciplines. Developed by the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship, the curriculum is grounded in the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice® and translates these standards into practical approaches for everyday simulation practice. Participants explore the full lifecycle of simulation-based education, including facilitation, prebriefing, debriefing, evaluation of learning and performance, and more. Designed to support simulation educator training and faculty development, the curriculum combines foundational knowledge with applied skill development through interactive modules, case-based scenarios, demonstration videos, reflective activities, and hands-on exercises. Whether new to clinical simulation or seeking to advance existing expertise, participants develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to lead effective simulation-based learning experiences in academic, clinical, and professional training environments. Participants earn a certificate of completion for each module and may earn a comprehensive certificate upon successful completion of the full program.

Syllabus

  • Introduction
    • The SUNY SimAcademy: Professional Development for Healthcare Simulation is a comprehensive resource designed to support new simulation educators in developing and delivering high-quality, effective simulation-based learning experiences. These modules provide foundational knowledge and practical guidance to help educators integrate simulation into healthcare education successfully. Aligned with the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice®, these modules will help educators understand key principles, develop structured and engaging simulation activities, and enhance learning outcomes for their students. Whether you're new to simulation or looking to refine your current approach, this course is designed to offer practical, evidence-informed strategies that you can apply directly in your teaching or training environment.
  • Facilitation
    • This module provides an in-depth exploration of the Facilitation standard within the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice®. Effective facilitation is essential to creating engaging, learner-centered simulation experiences that promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and meaningful learning. Participants will examine the roles and responsibilities of the simulation facilitator before, during, and after simulation activities. Topics include creating psychologically safe learning environments, supporting learner engagement, managing challenging situations, adapting facilitation strategies to learner needs, and maintaining alignment with simulation objectives. Through presentation content, interactive activities, reflective exercises, and scenario-based examples, learners will develop practical strategies for facilitating simulation experiences that support learner growth and achievement of intended outcomes.
  • Prebriefing
    • This module provides an in-depth exploration of the Prebriefing Process as outlined in the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice. Prebriefing is a foundational element of simulation-based education, designed to establish psychological safety, set clear expectations, and prepare learners for meaningful engagement in the simulation experience. Participants will gain insight into the history and evolution of prebriefing, its alignment with adult learning principles, and its role in supporting learner-centered simulation design. The module will cover essential components of effective prebriefing, including structured preparation, environment orientation, and the use of expert modeling and cognitive aids. Learners will also explore strategies for addressing common challenges and creating inclusive, psychologically safe learning environments.
  • Debriefing
    • This module provides an in-depth exploration of the Debriefing Process as part of the Healthcare Simulation Standard of Best Practice. Debriefing is a critical component in simulation-based education, fostering reflective learning and enhancing performance through structured feedback. Participants will gain an understanding of debriefing's role in promoting patient safety, improving clinical skills, and fostering critical thinking. The module will cover key principles, techniques, and frameworks for conducting effective debriefings, as well as common challenges and strategies for overcoming them.
  • Evaluation of Learning and Performance
    • This module focuses on the Evaluation of Learning and Performance as a core component of the Healthcare Simulation Standard of Best Practice. Evaluation is essential for measuring the effectiveness of simulation-based training, ensuring that learning objectives are met, and identifying areas for improvement. Learners will explore a variety of evaluation methods and tools used to assess both individual and team performance in healthcare simulations, while also gaining insight into how to provide actionable feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education
    • This module provides an overview of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice® Professional Integrity standard and its role in creating ethical, respectful, and psychologically safe simulation-based education experiences. Participants will explore key concepts including accountability, professional conduct, inclusion, confidentiality, and the establishment of safe learning environments aligned with current healthcare simulation standards. Through a combination of presentation content, interactive activities, reflective exercises, and scenario-based videos depicting challenging situations, learners will examine how professional integrity influences simulation design, facilitation, prebriefing, debriefing, and learner interactions. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on facilitator responses, apply principles from the standard, and practice strategies that promote trust, respect, inclusion, and professional behavior within simulation-based education.
  • Professional Integrity
    • This module provides an overview of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice® Professional Integrity standard and its role in creating ethical, respectful, and psychologically safe simulation-based education experiences. Participants will explore key concepts including accountability, professional conduct, inclusion, confidentiality, and the establishment of safe learning environments aligned with current healthcare simulation standards. Through presentation content, interactive activities, reflective exercises, and scenario-based examples, learners will examine how professional integrity influences simulation design, facilitation, prebriefing, debriefing, and learner interactions. Participants will have opportunities to apply principles from the standard and identify strategies that promote trust, respect, inclusion, confidentiality, and professional behavior within simulation-based education.
