This course provides medical and mental health professionals with a practical clinical framework for assessing and responding to acute suicidal states. Developed by the creator of the NCM (Narrative Crisis Model) framework for suicide and SCS (Suicidal Crisis Syndrome) as a diagnosis of acute suicidal states, the course introduces the theoretical foundations underlying these approaches and their application to clinical assessment.
The “Clinical Practice” module translates the framework into actionable clinical practice. Learners will explore the stages of the model, recognize stage-specific clinical indicators, and develop a structured approach to assessing where an individual falls within the continuum of acute suicidal states. The course examines what each stage means for the individual being assessed, including indicators of imminent suicidality and changes in acute suicidal states over time. Learners will also be introduced to stage-specific intervention strategies to support clinical decision-making and response. Case vignettes illustrate each stage, while providing guidance on how to conduct a diagnostic interview to identify the suicidal narrative and SCS.
This course is intended for patient-facing medical and mental health professionals, including physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians involved in the assessment and care of individuals who may experience suicidal crises.
