Uncover how you became the person you are today by examining the core social process of socialization. This course explores the various agents that shape our identities and connects them to the powerful influence of social structure and daily interactions. You will also analyze why societies label certain behaviors as "deviant," providing a deeper understanding of social norms. By the end of this course, you will be able to explain how these social forces shape identity and regulate behavior within any given society.

Syllabus

  • Socialization, Social Structure, Deviance, and Control
    • In this course, we will focus on examining a core process in society, which is socialization. You will learn how socialization shapes us to become who we are in our given societies. After we learn about the different agents of socialization we will then consider how our lives are shaped by broader social forces, such as social structure and social interactions. We end the course by learning about the concept of social deviance, which is behavior that violates social norms.
