The Art of Filmmaking: Sequence and Editing

Overview

The sequencing of images gives films their cinematic form. Editing is essential to establish a film’s rhythm, pacing, and experience for the viewer. The editing may be subtle and hardly visible, or it can be forcefully present. In this course, you will be introduced to different approaches to editing that include montage theory, continuity editing, and minimalist cinema. You will produce short videos based on prompts designed to explore editing concepts and techniques. To complete the assignments, a video camera is recommended, but a smartphone can be used. Access to, and a working knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro is required.

Course Overview
Introduction to Film Editing

This module introduces the course and fundamental concepts and functions of film editing. Students will learn about the pivotal role of an editor, the basic vocabulary, and tools used in editing. By the end of this module, students will have a solid foundation to build upon in subsequent modules. Additionally, students will begin hands-on experience with Adobe Premiere Pro to familiarize themselves with essential editing software.

Rhythm, Pacing, and Intro to Kinesthetic Empathy

This module focuses on the principles of rhythm and pacing as they relate to individual shots and sequences. Students will learn how to manipulate shot length, cut types, and tempo to create effective rhythm, enhancing the emotional impact of scenes. The concept of kinesthetic empathy is introduced, enabling students to create edits that resonate physically and emotionally with audiences at the shot level. Students will also learn practical Adobe Premiere Pro techniques to implement these concepts in their editing projects.

Trajectory Phrasing and Narrative Flow

Building upon shot-level editing, this module delves into narrative flow and continuity at the story level. Students will learn how to craft seamless transitions between scenes to create coherent and emotionally resonant narratives. The module introduces trajectory phrasing and explores advanced kinesthetic empathy, emphasizing their roles in enhancing narrative flow and audience engagement.

Montage and Beyond Continuity

This module explores montage techniques and the intentional disruption of traditional continuity to create non-linear and experimental narratives. Students will learn how to juxtapose images to generate meaning and evoke emotions. The module also covers strategies for breaking continuity rules artistically and introduces the concept of minimalist cinema.
