Master essential SketchUp tools and workflows tailored for interior space planning and foundational modeling. This course empowers designers to efficiently organize, manipulate, and prepare digital spaces for further development. This course introduces interior designers and architects to the core SketchUp techniques needed for effective space planning and foundational 3D modeling. Learners will explore essential navigation shortcuts, component management, modeling hierarchies, and time-saving tools that streamline the design process. By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently set up and manage SketchUp projects, import and export drawings, and create accurate as-built floor plans. Through a combination of clear explanations, practical demonstrations, and targeted quizzes, this course guides learners step-by-step through the key SketchUp features and workflows relevant to interior design. The content is structured to build confidence and fluency in using SketchUp for professional space planning. The course is designed for interior designers, architects, or anyone looking to master SketchUp for space planning purposes. A basic understanding of design concepts or prior experience with similar tools would be beneficial but not required. This course is part one of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Syllabus

  • Using Essential Tools and Shortcuts for Space Planning
    • This module introduces key tools and shortcuts in SketchUp to enhance efficiency and precision in space planning. Learners will explore axis locking, mouse and keyboard navigation, guide creation, and advanced component management for repeated elements. By mastering these features, users can streamline their modeling workflow and extract valuable data from their designs.
  • Becca's Hierarchy of Modeling and the Designer's Modeling Approach
    • This module introduces Becca's structured hierarchy for modifying SketchUp objects, guiding learners through each step with practical examples. You will explore efficient modeling workflows, learn best practices for tagging groups and components, and discover how to leverage the Large Tool Set for enhanced productivity.
  • Extruding along Curves and Other Timesavers
    • This module introduces advanced SketchUp techniques to boost modeling efficiency, including extruding along curves, troubleshooting the Follow Me tool, and using Autofold for complex geometry. Learners will also explore the differences between Solid Tools and Intersect Faces, understand the Union function, and discover strategies to optimize model performance by purging unused elements.
  • Importing and Exporting a Drawing
    • This module guides learners through the process of importing and exporting various drawing file types in SketchUp, including hand sketches, CAD, and Revit files. You will also explore techniques for tracing imported images, extruding shapes, and collaborating with others using shared models. By the end, you'll be able to efficiently manage drawing files and integrate them into your SketchUp workflow.
  • Creating the As-Built Floor Plan
    • This module guides learners through the foundational steps of constructing a commercial building's as-built floor plan in SketchUp. You will practice creating and modifying architectural elements such as walls, floors, windows, doors, and staircases using CAD references and SketchUp tools. By the end, you'll be able to efficiently model key structural features and openings in a 3D environment.
