This course teaches you how to design and sculpt open world landscapes in Unreal Engine 5. You’ll master essential skills like terrain sculpting, foliage placement, material creation, and atmospheric lighting to create stunning virtual environments. Throughout the course, you'll learn how to organize your project with efficient level management, sculpt realistic landscapes, and populate them with optimized foliage. You'll also gain insight into advanced lighting techniques and post-processing to elevate the visual quality of your work. By combining hands-on practice and theoretical knowledge, this course ensures you not only understand how to use the tools but also how to apply them in real-world scenarios for high-quality open world creation. This course is ideal for aspiring landscape artists and developers looking to work in games, cinematics, or virtual production. Some prior experience with Unreal Engine or 3D design is recommended but not essential. This course is part two of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Syllabus

  • Managing Levels and Layers
    • This module explores how to organize, manage, and optimize game environments in Unreal Engine using levels, lighting scenarios, and the World Partition system. Learners will gain hands-on experience setting up level hierarchies, configuring dynamic loading, and leveraging advanced features for efficient world building.
  • Building Your Landscape
    • This module guides learners through the process of prototyping and sculpting landscapes in Unreal Engine, from initial blockout to advanced terrain creation using heightmaps. Participants will gain hands-on experience with landscape and sculpting tools to design and refine custom environments. By the end, learners will understand how to efficiently build and modify terrain for game levels.
  • Populating Your World with Foliage
    • This module explores how to enhance digital environments by integrating and optimizing foliage. Learners will discover how to use specialized tools to populate scenes with vegetation and ensure efficient performance through static mesh optimization. By the end, you'll be able to create immersive, visually rich worlds while maintaining project efficiency.
  • Introduction to Materials
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of creating and editing materials in Unreal Engine, focusing on how materials define the appearance and behavior of surfaces under different lighting conditions. Learners will explore the Material Editor interface, experiment with basic material creation, and discover efficient workflows for material development.
  • Create Your World's Atmospheric Lighting
    • This module explores the essential tools and techniques for crafting immersive atmospheric lighting in virtual environments. Learners will discover how to use Unreal Engine 5's Environment Light Mixer, SkyLight, and Exponential Height Fog, as well as advanced rendering technologies like Virtual Shadow Maps, Nanite, and Lumen to enhance realism and mood in open world games.
  • Setting Up Your Post Process Volume
    • This module introduces the Post Process Volume in Unreal Engine, guiding learners through its properties and how it shapes the visual style of a scene. You will explore color grading, tonemapping, and workflows for effective image adjustments to enhance your project's look.
