Modern applications rely on well-designed web APIs to enable communication between systems, services, and clients. This course teaches the core principles of API design and development using ASP.NET Core, helping learners build scalable, maintainable, and industry-standard web services. Throughout the course, learners will develop practical skills in designing RESTful APIs, understanding alternative API architectures such as gRPC and GraphQL, and implementing API functionality using ASP.NET Core. By exploring routing, configuration, dependency injection, middleware, logging, and data access, learners will gain the knowledge needed to create robust APIs for real-world applications. What sets this course apart is its balanced approach to both conceptual understanding and hands-on implementation. Learners not only study API design principles but also apply them through practical examples and Entity Framework Core-based data access scenarios. This course is ideal for aspiring and practicing .NET developers, software engineers, and IT professionals who want to build modern web APIs. A basic understanding of C# programming and object-oriented development concepts is recommended. This course is part one of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Syllabus

  • Fundamentals of Web APIs
    • This module introduces the foundational concepts of web APIs, covering key architectural styles such as REST, gRPC, GraphQL, and real-time APIs. Learners will explore API design principles, implementation steps, HTTP methods, response codes, and documentation standards. By the end, you'll understand how to design and document robust APIs for modern web applications.
  • Getting Started with ASP.NET Core Web APIs
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of building RESTful web APIs using ASP.NET Core. Learners will set up projects with the .NET CLI, implement and test API endpoints, and apply dependency injection for scalable service management. Practical debugging and service registration techniques are also covered.
  • ASP.NET Core Fundamentals (Part 1)
    • This module introduces key concepts in ASP.NET Core API development, including advanced routing techniques, environment-specific configuration, and secure management of application settings. Learners will gain practical skills in configuring applications for different environments and leveraging tools like Azure Key Vault and Visual Studio Code for effective development and deployment.
  • ASP.NET Core Fundamentals (Part 2)
    • This module delves into advanced logging and middleware concepts in ASP.NET Core, including configuring log levels, integrating third-party logging providers, and assembling middleware pipelines. Learners will gain practical skills in customizing request handling and optimizing application diagnostics.
  • Data Access in ASP.NET Core (Part 1: Entity Framework Core Fundamentals)
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of data access in ASP.NET Core using Entity Framework Core. Learners will explore how to configure DbContext, perform CRUD operations with LINQ, and manage data mapping using Fluent API. Practical examples guide you through setting up, querying, and maintaining a database-backed application.
  • Data Access in ASP.NET Core (Part 2: Entity Relationships)
    • This module explores how to configure and manage entity relationships in ASP.NET Core using Entity Framework Core. Learners will gain hands-on experience with CRUD operations for one-to-many and many-to-many relationships, as well as techniques for querying and retrieving related data through REST APIs.
  • Data Access in ASP.NET Core (Part 3: Tips)
    • This module delves into advanced data access strategies in ASP.NET Core, including optimizing performance with DbContext pooling, understanding tracking behaviors, and handling concurrency conflicts. Learners will also explore the differences between IQueryable and IEnumerable, client versus server evaluation, and the use of raw SQL queries for complex scenarios.
