This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. Master Blender for game asset creation and seamlessly integrate your models into Unity with this in-depth course. You'll learn how to create modular assets, design procedural materials, and prepare game-ready models using advanced techniques that enhance workflow efficiency and asset quality. Whether you're a beginner or intermediate user of Blender, this course equips you with the skills to bring your game development pipeline to the next level. You’ll begin by establishing a solid workflow for both Blender and Unity, learning how to set preferences, use essential shortcuts, and optimize your workspace. From there, you’ll dive into modeling techniques, exploring everything from basic transformations to advanced procedural material creation. You'll learn how to create assets that are optimized for game engines, including the proper use of textures, materials, and UV mapping. The course covers modular modeling in great detail, focusing on creating interchangeable turret parts, using symmetry and mirroring tools to speed up your work, and refining your assets with real-time feedback in Unity. You’ll also learn how to bake various maps like normal maps and ambient occlusion, helping you create low-poly assets that look detailed and realistic in-game. This course is perfect for aspiring game artists and developers who want to specialize in asset creation for games using Blender and Unity. A basic understanding of Blender or 3D modeling is recommended, as this course covers intermediate to advanced topics in both modeling and integration. By the end of the course, you will be able to create modular game assets in Blender, apply procedural materials, set up a pipeline for Unity integration, and bake high-quality textures and maps for game-ready assets.

Syllabus

  • Part 2 B.02 Orientation
    • In this module, we will introduce you to the course structure, highlighting key concepts and the workflow you'll follow in game asset creation. You will learn how to leverage external resources, troubleshoot common issues, and share your progress with the community. This section is designed to help you build a solid foundation for the entire project and keep you on track as you progress through the course.
  • Part B.03 New To Blender? Start Here!
    • In this module, we will introduce Blender from the ground up, covering essential preferences, workspace setups, and basic navigation techniques. You will learn key modeling tools, object transformations, and the fundamental differences between objects and their data. By the end of this section, you will be equipped with the skills needed to begin creating and texturing 3D models efficiently in Blender.
  • Part 2 B.04 Establishing Our Pipeline
    • In this module, we will focus on establishing a smooth pipeline between Blender and Unity, ensuring your models and assets are ready for game development. You will learn the importance of correct object origins, transformations, and organization using collections. Additionally, we will cover the export process, including troubleshooting common issues that may arise during the workflow.
  • Part 2 B.05 Modular Models
    • In this module, we will explore modular modeling techniques for creating reusable game assets. You’ll learn how to structure components using mirroring, symmetry, and parenting, and how to export modular pieces for efficient asset creation. This section is designed to help you streamline the modeling process and ensure that your assets are game-ready, with a focus on turret components.
  • Part 2 B.06 Procedural Materials
    • In this module, we will dive into the creation of procedural materials, which provide flexibility and dynamic control over your asset textures. You will learn to use Blender’s shader nodes to build complex materials and refine them with masks for added realism. This section will help you create highly customizable materials that can be applied to your game assets, ensuring a unique and consistent look throughout the game.
  • Part 2 B.07 Getting Game Ready
    • In this module, we will focus on preparing your models for integration into Unity by creating high-quality textures and optimizing them for game performance. You’ll learn how to unwrap models, bake textures, and generate normal, ambient occlusion, and metallic maps. This section ensures that your game assets are ready to be imported into Unity with visually rich and efficient textures.
