Employees need clear direction, meaningful support, effective communication, and the right motivation to succeed. This practical, management-focused course provides a structured approach to understanding what drives people and creating the conditions for sustained performance. You'll explore proven methods of motivating employees, including goal setting, recognition and rewards, manager-employee relationships, coaching, supportive communication, and active listening, while also learning how to identify and address workplace challenges such as stress, negativity, and productivity issues. Rather than relying on generic management advice, the course connects key concepts to realistic workplace situations through hands-on activities, discussion questions, role-play exercises, assessments, and a course-end project. You'll practice applying employee motivation strategies to real scenarios, including developing SMART goals, choosing effective recognition and reward strategies, coaching employees, and handling workplace challenges. By the end of the course, you'll have practical tools to motivate, support, and lead your team with greater confidence.

Syllabus

Effective Goal Setting
- This foundational module will explore the goal setting process, the characteristics of great goals, different types of goals, the art of collaborating with employees, and special topics such as what to do when goals shift. Through applied and introspective activities, learners will be guided to first understand and then apply themselves to the details that make goals work. This module sets the tone and ensures leaners are ready to hit the ground running with their employees to create compelling and thoughtful goals.
Effective Use of Recognition and Rewards
- This module provides a foundation for understanding how to motivate employees through proper recognition and use of rewards. We will explore the business case for caring about motivation at different levels, the characteristics of great rewards and how they are to be used, as well as different forms of recognition and rewards including individual versus group approaches and monetary versus non-monetary rewards.
Managing Relationships and Communication
- This module provides the tools needed to successfully manage the manager–employee relationship, deliver supportive communication, and identify signs of trouble that require attention to maintain strong working relationships.
