Every project runs on the people connected to it, yet most project managers can describe their deliverables in more detail than the person who could quietly stall them for months. This course gives you a framework for figuring out exactly who your stakeholders are and how much of your attention each one deserves. You'll classify each stakeholder using two measures, power and interest, and place them on a Stakeholder Placement Chart with four quadrants. From there, you'll build a tailored plan for each type: champions and adversaries who hold both power and interest, gatekeepers who can quietly block your progress, vocal supporters and critics without formal authority, and quiet stakeholders who just need a courtesy notice. You'll practice these skills through dialogues and role plays built around stakeholders pulled from everyday project scenarios. By the end of this course, you'll be able to classify any project stakeholder by power and interest, build a plan matched to their quadrant, and adjust your approach to turn critics into supporters and gatekeepers into allies.

Syllabus

  • What Is a Stakeholder?
    • Every project runs on people, and how well you manage them determines whether the work actually lands. In this module, you'll define what makes someone a stakeholder and locate them on the power and interest measures that shape how you'll manage them.
  • Types of Stakeholders
    • Knowing who your stakeholders are means nothing if you can't tell how to treat each one differently. In this module, you'll categorize stakeholders across all four quadrants of the Stakeholder Placement Chart so you can tailor your approach to each type.
  • High-Power and High-Interest
    • Your most important stakeholders are also the ones who can make or break your project in either direction. In this module, you'll identify high-power, high-interest stakeholders, read what actually drives them, and build a management plan that keeps them as champions rather than adversaries.
  • High-Power and Low-Interest
    • Some stakeholders can shut your project down without ever losing a minute of sleep over it. In this module, you'll identify high-power, low-interest stakeholders and build a plan to keep them as a gatekeeper who lets you through, not a wall that stops you.
  • Low-Power and High-Interest
    • Not every stakeholder can shape your project's direction, but plenty of them will still have plenty to say about how it's going. In this module, you'll identify low-power, high-interest stakeholders and manage them in a way that earns you supporters instead of critics.
  • Low-Power and Low-Interest
    • Not every stakeholder needs your full attention, but that doesn't mean they need none of it. In this module, you'll identify low-power, low-interest stakeholders and calibrate a simple courtesy notice to exactly the right amount of management.
  • Conclusion
    • You've spent this course learning how to size up a stakeholder and build the right plan for them. In this module, you'll apply that full process to a real project of your own, classifying its stakeholders and building a management plan for each one.
