Investing time in your management skills will pay dividends for you and your team (and your boss!), yet most people never study management in any scientific way. Excellent management is actually easy to learn, but trying to pick it up by copying good or bad leaders is surprisingly difficult. Improvising as you go rarely leads to consistently effective results. As a leader, there’s a lot on your plate. You’re expected to lead a team, make tough decisions, delegate work (without micromanaging!), and somehow keep everyone happy and productive. On top of that, you need to delegate properly, avoid burnout, and make your boss think you’ve got everything under control. The good news? This course is here to help. You’ll learn the difference between management and leadership, how to delegate effectively, what your leadership options are, how to motivate different types of people, and when to empower others without slipping into abdication. I designed this course specifically for people just like you—those thrown into the deep end of leadership who want practical advice that works right now. Whether you’re managing a small team or leading in a large organization, I’ll give you the tools and strategies you need to succeed. You’ll love this course because it isn’t a boring list of “dos and don’ts.” It’s packed with real-world, practical advice that’s been tested by thousands of managers I’ve worked with. I’m Chris Croft, and with over 20 years of experience, I specialize in making leadership simple, practical, and even a bit fun.

Syllabus

  • What's a boss for?
    • Let's begin by looking at your role as a boss - what are you there to deliver as a primary focus and how can you understanding your team and workplace at a deeper level?
  • Motivation
    • Motivation ties into so many factors affecting long term success - delegation, promotion, communication, employee turnover, team bonding, and a general feeling of personal life satisfaction. So let's work out how to get it right!
  • Team audit
    • Take time in this section to assess each member of your team and how they fit together as a whole. We will look at continuous learning, ownership of tasks, and motivation of individuals and the group.
  • Personality
    • The four personality colours theory applies to so many areas of life, and can be an extremely empowering management tool. Understanding how each of your team members likes to work and communicate will make management a much smoother experience.
  • Managing your boss
    • Most likely, as well as managing others, you have a boss above you as well. Interacting with them (and hopefully even improving them!) will make your life better but also that of the team below you. It's well worth investing some time in learning about interpersonal hierarchy skills.
  • Levels of involvement
    • Planning for new projects can be a minefield - how much should you involve your team in the process and at which stages? This module outlines all of that in detail and gives you frameworks to assess team members to make sure they are as engaged as possible with your work.
  • Situational Leadership
    • Mastering Situational Leadership means understanding how your team like/need to be managed on an individual basis. How to allocate tasks, empower individuals to improve, and coach everyone to success.
  • Coaching
    • Coaching is the cornerstone of an excellent manager - someone who doesn't just pass tasks down the tree but truly understands and grows every team member. It benefits them but it will also benefit you if your team are highly motivated, trained and self sufficient.
  • Levels of Freedom
    • Knowing how much freedom to give a team is based on individuals but also on the specific task. Some need a tighter control than others and getting this balance right means things can come off your plate and onto theirs without anyone feeling stressed or over burdened.
  • The Management Matrix for Delegation
    • The Management Matrix looks at how to balance empowerment and delegation when it comes to planning tasks vs doing them. This module examines the theory in detail and how you can apply it to your team.
  • Delegation
    • Delegating can be really freeing for you and motivational for your team - but there are challenges too. This section looks at the limitations, the benefits, and the practicalities of delegating effectively.
  • Taking the Monkey
    • In this section we look at reverse delegation - taking tasks back off other people when they shouldn't be being passed. Understand when and how it happens, and how to avoid it.
  • Virtual/Remote Teams
    • Working remote or virtually is a huge part of modern working life and so it's important to address the most effective ways to do it. Building motivation, autonomy, communication and adapting to different personality types - it's all covered here.
  • Beyond delegation
    • Let's go above and beyond with our delegation learnings. In this next section we cover abdication, empowerment, and getting extra responsibility from your boss so you can continue to empower your team too.
  • Appraisals
    • In my opinion every great company does appraisals well - it's a key marker of success for me. So let's learn what they are how to make them highly effective at all levels of the hierarchy.
  • Considering regular future repeating actions
    • Finally, make yourself a long term implementation plan. Consider what you'll be implementing from this course on a regular basis both short term and long term.
