Are your projects drowning in "in-progress" tasks? This course, Manage Your Project Flow with WIP Limits, is the breakthrough for project managers, team leads, and professionals ready to swap constant context-switching for focused, predictable success. It’s built on a powerful, counterintuitive concept: the best way to speed up your projects is to intentionally do less at once. At its core is the practice of setting Work-in-Progress (WIP) limits to take control of your workflow. You will learn to stop "pushing" work onto your overloaded team and instead create a "pull system" where new tasks are started only when there is capacity. Through hands-on labs and real-world scenarios, you will master how to visualize your process to spot bottlenecks, calculate optimal WIP limits to maximize focus, and use key flow metrics like Cycle Time and Throughput to measure your success. You will leave this course with the ability to dramatically reduce task completion time, increase team productivity, and provide the accurate, predictable forecasts that stakeholders love. Enroll now to stop starting and start finishing. We encourage you to explore Coursera's extensive catalog to build on what you've learned. Syllabus

  • Defining and Calculating Your WIP Limits
    • This module introduces the core concepts behind Work-in-Progress (WIP) limits. Learners will explore why controlling workflow is critical for team productivity and focus. They will learn to identify active work stages, understand the cognitive science behind limiting tasks, and use a practical formula to calculate an appropriate WIP limit for a given team scenario.
  • Designing and Implementing a Pull System
    • In this module, learners move from theory to application. They will learn how WIP limits enable a "pull system," where work is pulled into the flow only when there is capacity. Learners will design the rules and communication strategies needed to implement this system effectively, focusing on gaining team buy-in and handling common challenges.
