This course helps business professionals apply advanced IP concepts to complex commercial and strategic decisions at technology companies. You will learn where IP rights and antitrust law intersect, how standard essential patents and FRAND commitments work, and how cross-licensing, patent pools, and dual licensing are structured. You will also learn how to plan international IP protection, prioritize IP investments, build a phased IP roadmap, and communicate it to leadership. Finally, you will explore how governance, financing, and acquisitions depend on IP, and how to assess the IP landscape of future emerging technologies.

Syllabus

  • Module 1: Antitrust, Standards, Advanced Licensing, and International IP
    • You will learn where IP rights and antitrust law intersect, including patent misuse, refusal to license, and licensing red flags to escalate to counsel. You will also learn how standard essential patents and FRAND commitments work, how cross-licensing, patent pools, and dual licensing are structured, and how to plan international IP protection using the PCT, Paris Convention, Madrid Protocol, and Berne Convention.
  • Module 2: Building and Governing a Comprehensive IP Strategy
    • You will learn the six phases of a continuous IP strategy (identify, protect, manage, commercialize, enforce, and comply), how to prioritize IP investments by exposure, impact, timing, and cost, and how to build a phased roadmap and present it to leadership in business terms. You will also learn how board oversight and IP due diligence shape financing, acquisitions, and IPOs, and how to apply a five-question framework to assess the IP landscape of future emerging technologies.
