Linux administration starts at the command line — and this course builds the skills you need to work there with confidence. You'll begin by setting up your learning environment and understanding how the LFCS certification is structured. From there, you'll learn to access Linux systems locally and remotely, navigate the filesystem, use system documentation, and manage files, directories, and symbolic links from the CLI. The course then covers file permissions in depth: reading and modifying standard permission bits, understanding when to apply SUID, SGID, and the sticky bit, and locating files efficiently by name, type, and attributes. These are skills you'll use in every future administration task. In the final module, you'll build text processing and version control skills: searching file content with grep, writing basic and extended regular expressions, comparing and manipulating files, compressing and archiving data, and managing I/O redirection. You'll also work with SSL certificate files and perform core Git operations — committing changes, managing branches, and working with remote repositories. Every topic is reinforced with hands-on labs that build the command-line precision required for the LFCS exam and real-world administration work. Syllabus

Introduction & Environment Setup

This module introduces the LFCS specialization, explains the exam path, and prepares learners to use the course environment and community resources effectively. It helps learners understand how the curriculum is organized and how to use supporting materials to study with confidence.

Console Access & File Management

This module builds the hands-on Linux skills needed to access systems and manage files confidently from both local and remote environments. Learners practice logging in, using documentation, and performing common file and link operations on the command line.

Permissions and File Searching

This module focuses on controlling access to files and locating resources across Linux systems. Learners work with standard permissions, special permission bits, and common file search techniques used during administration and troubleshooting.

Text Processing and Version Control

This module develops the command-line text and file handling skills that Linux administrators use to inspect data, transform content, automate output, and manage source-controlled changes. Learners practice comparing files, using editors and pagers, working with regular expressions, handling archives, redirecting input and output, managing certificates, and performing core Git operations.
