Develop communication and body-awareness skills that support collaborative, person-centered pain care. This course examines how listening, predictability, consent, choice, and practitioner language can influence a person’s care experience. You will learn to distinguish direct sensations from thoughts and interpretations, help clients replace global labels with more specific descriptions, and explain interoception, proprioception, and exteroception in practical language. The course then applies somatic awareness through orienting, body scanning, proprioceptive exploration, and consent-based touch. These methods are presented as optional tools rather than tests, diagnoses, or guaranteed methods for regulating the nervous system. You will also examine autonomic state as context and learn to use breathing and awareness practices without making unsupported claims about a person’s internal state. By the end of the course, you will be able to design a predictable, regulation-informed session that combines listening, pacing, clear communication, consent, choice, and appropriate body-awareness practices while remaining responsive to the individual.

Syllabus

  • Module 1: Safety Before Intervention
    • This opening module establishes the safety decisions that come before education, exercise, or hands-on care. Learners begin with an integrated-care roadmap, then practice deciding when to proceed, pause, refer, or activate emergency support.
  • Module 2: Manual Therapy in a Modern Pain Model
    • This module examines hands-on care without relying on structural-correction stories. Learners define a limited role for manual therapy, select pressure according to response, and discuss trigger points with appropriate scientific uncertainty.
  • Module 3: From Passive Relief to Active Care
    • This module turns short-term symptom change into active, sustainable care. Learners will decide when a local technique is worth testing, use movement to develop meaningful capacity, and plan graded activity without making pain elimination the price of participation.
  • Module 4: Regional Case Application
    • This module applies the course framework to low-back and neck-pain cases. Learners will organize regional findings, personal context, safety information, goals, and treatment responses without allowing one body structure or technique to dominate the plan.
  • Module 5: Chronic Pain Program Design
    • This module converts individual treatment decisions into a coordinated program. Learners will define outcomes, assign each intervention a purpose, plan delivery and review points, coordinate care, and establish how the program will progress, change, or end.
  • Module 6: Course Summary
    • This final module consolidates the course into one reusable professional workflow. Learners revisit the opening case, audit the program built in Module 5, and identify how they will apply the course within their own role.
