Today, we face our own pivotal moment in the fight to protect and understand open discourse. In "Speak Freely, Think Critically," you'll uncover: ◦ The shocking ways AI and social media are reshaping how we think and communicate ◦ Powerful techniques used by master negotiators to bridge seemingly impossible divides ◦ Why defending unpopular speech is crucial in our digital age ◦ Groundbreaking strategies for fostering understanding across deep divides ◦ The surprising neuroscience behind why even the smartest people resist opposing views Whether you're a business leader building stronger teams, an educator reaching diverse students, or someone navigating today's social dynamics, this course will transform how you engage with different perspectives. You’ll learn not just to manage challenging conversations, but to thrive in them. The skills of engaging across differences have never been more urgent. Don’t just learn about free speech—master it. Syllabus

  • The Free Speech Paradox: Why We Love It Until We Hate It
    • Great ideas only matter if people can share them. This module dives into the drama of how ideas spread or get squashed - from a basket lowered down Damascus' walls to Putin's crackdown on satire. You'll discover the clever ways narcissistic leaders suppress questioning while claiming to welcome it, see how your brain processes challenges to your beliefs, and explore why social media can make us both smarter and dumber at the same time. Through stories that bring neuroscience to life, you'll learn why open dialogue drives innovation and problem-solving, while its absence leads to stagnation. Whether you lead a team, want to spot manipulation tactics, or just care about keeping good ideas alive, this module reveals the hidden forces shaping our conversations and gives you practical tools for our digital age.
  • Your Brain and Free Speech: Understanding Leads to Mastery
    • Why do some ideas make us bristle before we even hear them out? In this module, we dive into the fascinating science of how your brain handles challenging ideas. You'll discover why your automatic reactions can sometimes hijack rational thinking, how experiences shape the neural pathways that guide your responses, and what this all means for having better conversations across differences. From ancient Damascus to modern neuroscience labs, we explore how understanding your brain's inner workings can help you master difficult discussions. Plus, you'll get hands-on practice with "Sway" - an innovative AI tool for strengthening your dialogue muscles. Perfect for anyone who's ever wondered why smart people can disagree so strongly, or who wants to have more productive conversations about tough topics. No neuroscience background required - just bring your curiosity about how minds (including your own) really work!
  • Recognizing Modern Threats: Preserving Free Speech Today
    • Want to be part of keeping meaningful dialogue alive in our digital age? This final module brings together everything we've learned about brains, bias, and human behavior to tackle today's toughest free speech challenges. You'll see how real innovators are turning age-old problems into new solutions - like using disagreement itself to make online discussions better. Through concrete examples and cutting-edge tools, you'll discover what works (and what doesn't) in fostering open dialogue, both online and off. Plus, you'll get hands-on practice with approaches you can use right away. Whether you lead a team, engage in public debates, or just want better discussions with friends and family, this module gives you practical ways to help build a world where different voices don't just survive - they help us all think better.

I have now taken all of Barbara Oakley's courses on Coursera. This one was a bit different in content as it was about free speech and thinking. The teaching did not change, though, it was great as always. I enjoyed the lecturers and their ideas, and…

A useful course with immediate practical application. In today’s increasingly fragmented society, the knowledge gained from the course helps to reduce conflicts and protect one’s mental health from excessive irritation. It is worth learning and pass…

I found myself using what I was learning as I was learning it, which demonstrates the relevance of the topic of recognizing, participating in and preserving free speech. The information was presented in a variety of formats, allowing enough diversit…

Another great course from "learning how to learn". I ama scientist and need to think about biases and assessing evidence arguably more than an average person and I have learned more about how my brain works, about my own blind spots, and about what…

The content is quite good. What I didn't like, that in a lot of presentations (lectures) AI generated videos were constantly playing in the background. While AI ensured that those videos actually matched the point of the lecture, they were quite distracting and in the end annoying.
I still give 5 stars because I learned something and (to my surprise) it changed one of my beliefs about free speech.

The neuroscience-informed content was interesting and it would have been nice to see a lot more of that.

Some of the contemporary free speech issue discussion felt a bit jejune and superficial.

In some cases the presentation seemed to give specific people who I've previously seen to be opportunistic, bad faith actors, on these and other issues, a platform that I personally would not have wanted to stand on alongside them.

Having completed "The Mindshift" & "Learning How to Learn" by Drs Sejnowski and Oakley I've had high expectations of this course, and those were exceeded thanks to bringing in more experts on the topic. I would submit this course is a must-have - or at least a must-start-with for anyone willing to retain their agency and some sense of control over our lives. If not the much-celebrated "red pill", at least it's a good starting point into understanding the rationalle behind free speech and free thinking, understanding common manipulations and as a result regaining some control over your thoughts and emotions from big tech and governments.

My adult son believes the world is evil and unjust. He supports censorship. He believes important services should not be entrusted to for-profit organizations. I strongly disagree with all of these positions but, of course , I still love my son.

This course has given me the tools to engage him in discussing these topics without fear of losing him.

This is a comprehensive and excellent course. The accompanying videos are also informative and engaging. It is current, timely and relevant for students, faculty, staff and administrators.
(There are still a few glitches in the questions/exam sections).

This course is very well put together, deliberately seeks not to be biased and covers a diversity of ideas that contribute to the idea of free speech. It's much more complex than a yes we should Vs no we shouldn't have it. Including history, the mind, culture, ai, biases, comedy and a spectrum of political ideas. It's very good, thought provoking and I'd say essential. Although it's like air that we may notice more when it's gone or poorer quality, it's much more nuanced and explains why so.

I really enjoyed this course. I learned a very important lesson, an essential lesson really, whereby listening to opposing viewpoint is positive and opens the way to a more inclusive society rather than the opposite. Lots of interesting material and references. I will repeat it.

Would be ideal mandatory course for MPs. Well presented and engaging. Thoroughly enjoyable and memorable

I had no idea that the basal ganglia had such an important part to play in conditioning our responses to new ideas. I am astounded at how entrenched this way of being can become and how easily people are threatened by new ideas even when not under pressure to conform. I loved the multidisciplinary approach to the teaching and the range of speakers who were interviewed. The research was widespread and the references offered books of practical value too.
I am still thinking about free speech and how tolerant one must be for it to serve society. A closed mindset is short term and limits growth. I am going to the do the course again in a few months' time. Thank you all!

Course is well organized and thoughtfully presented. This course offered insights that I knee nothing about previously. It will make me approach future uncomfortable conversations differently. Thank you.

Great course! I was directed to this course through a podcast “Teaching in Higher Ed” and I enrolled more to see the teaching format and tools. The incredible content is so applicable to our world. Thank you for this thought provoking experience!

The course explains the way our brains work and should be required course in high schools and universities. The materials are excellent and there are a lot of additional references and further reading provided.

Fascinating subject, well presented and thoughtful. Makes me uneasy and uncertain, because it challenges many of my deep believes on how people should talk to each other. Highly recommended food for thought.
