This course provides a practical guide to mastering and facilitating the five core scrum events: the sprint, sprint planning, daily scrum, sprint review, and sprint retrospective. Learners will develop key facilitation skills—such as active listening, powerful questioning, and active observation—to keep team interactions focused, inclusive, and actionable. Additionally, the course covers strategic backlog management and backlog refinement techniques like ordering, splitting, and adding detail to optimize workflow across successive sprints.

Syllabus

  • Establishing Order: Structure and Purpose
    • Dive into the foundational heartbeat of agile delivery by exploring the core structure, timing, and intent behind scrum’s structured workflow. In this module, you will learn to distinguish between the five container and timeboxed events: the sprint, sprint planning, the daily scrum, the sprint review, and the sprint retrospective. By following a real-world product walkthrough, you will discover how these events establish a predictable rhythm and flow, enabling teams to continuously deliver usable product chunks and maximize customer value.
  • Mastering Scrum Events: The Art of Facilitation
    • Unleash your team's collaborative potential by shifting from rigid processes to impactful facilitation. This module focuses on how the responsibilities of running scrum events are shared and delegated across the scrum master, product owner, and developers as a team matures. You will develop and apply four key interpersonal facilitation skills—active listening, powerful questioning, intentional observation, and open curiosity—to create a safe environment, manage constructive stakeholder feedback, and drive clear, actionable team outcomes.
  • Organizing the Toolbox: Managing the Backlogs
    • Examine the essential infrastructure of scrum product management: the backlogs. This module details the baseline anatomy, clear purpose, and distinct ownership of both the product backlog and the sprint backlog. You will learn how the product owner strategically prioritizes the master list using value, cost of delay, and risk mitigation, while the developers organize and track their sprint backlog tasks daily. Additionally, you will review the physical and digital tracking tools needed to ensure absolute transparency and live collaboration across the entire team.
  • Taking Action: The Joy of Refining
    • Discover how to sculpt your product roadmap into a strategic masterpiece through continuous backlog refinement. Instead of treating a backlog as a static archive, you will learn why refinement must operate as an ongoing process to actively address market shifts, capture fresh ideas, and minimize project waste. Through targeted case studies, you will master the three primary implementation techniques for getting items ready for a sprint: value-based ordering, splitting large or complex items into achievable chunks, and adding granular detail via user stories and explicit acceptance criteria.
