Book smarts get people into the room. Emotional intelligence decides what happens once they are in it. The ability to recognize what you are feeling, manage it before it manages you, read what other people are feeling, and influence that without manipulation is the difference between a technically capable person and an effective one. Unlike cognitive ability, emotional intelligence can be measured, practiced, and raised at any age, which is exactly what this course sets out to do. Across four thematic modules and eight focused lessons, you will start by defining emotional intelligence, assessing your own, and looking at the science that separates emotional skill from personality. You will then build the four core capabilities in sequence, namely emotional self-awareness, emotional self-management, empathy, and managing the emotions of other people. From there you will take all four to work, through difficult workplace situations, career fit and influence, emotionally intelligent leadership, and the emotionally intelligent workplace. The course closes at home and in the rest of life, covering college transitions, intimate and social relationships, parenting, and raising an emotionally intelligent child. Each lesson opens with two five-minute topic videos followed immediately by applied practice, and every module closes with a hands-on lab, a roleplay, a discussion prompt, and a graded assessment, so nothing stays theoretical for long. Whether you are managing a team, navigating a difficult colleague, holding a relationship together, or raising a child, this course gives you the self-assessments, techniques, and worked scenarios that turn emotional reaction into deliberate response. By the end, you will be able to name what you are feeling in the moment, choose your response, and read and shift the emotional state of the people around you.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to the Entire Course
    • Provides a starting-point assessment that helps learners understand their current readiness across the emotional intelligence skills developed throughout the course. It highlights strengths and development needs across self-awareness, self-management, empathy, managing others, and applying emotional intelligence at work and at home, then uses these results to recommend where learners may benefit from greater focus. The pathway gate supports self-awareness and flexible navigation without restricting access to any part of the course.
  • There Is a New Kind of Intelligence in Town
    • Establishes the foundation for understanding emotional intelligence and how it differs from cognitive ability and personality. Learners explore how emotionally intelligent people feel, think, and behave, assess their own emotional intelligence, and examine the relationship between emotional skills, happiness, and optimism. The module also introduces EQ assessment and the evidence showing that emotional intelligence can be developed and strengthened over time.
  • The Essentials: Awareness, Management, Empathy, and Influence
    • Develops the four core emotional intelligence capabilities in sequence: recognizing your own emotions, managing them, understanding others through empathy, and managing other people's emotions. Learners distinguish feelings, emotions, and moods, apply the ABCDE method, and explore cognitive restructuring, relaxation, mindfulness, and visualization. The module then builds empathy through verbal and nonverbal cues and introduces practical techniques for handling difficult people and influencing emotional interactions constructively.
  • Taking Emotional Intelligence to Work
    • Applies emotional intelligence to workplace pressure, performance, influence, leadership, and team dynamics. Learners identify situations that trigger difficult emotional reactions, assess career fit, and use empathy and assertiveness to influence others effectively. The module then develops emotionally intelligent leadership through the four leadership pillars and helps learners assess workplace climate, strengthen teamwork, and identify practical ways to raise emotional intelligence across a team or organization.
  • Using Emotional Intelligence Beyond the Office
    • Extends emotional intelligence skills into study transitions, relationships, parenting, and family life. Learners explore the emotional and social challenges of college transitions, assess and strengthen relationships, and practice using empathy and emotional awareness during difficult interactions. The module also develops emotionally intelligent parenting through self-control, impulse management, empathy, mood awareness, and practical approaches for helping children and teenagers build their own emotional intelligence.
  • Course Wrap-Up and Next Steps
    • Provides practical reference, reflection, and application resources that help learners consolidate and continue developing the emotional intelligence skills introduced throughout the course. These resources bring together self-awareness and emotion-management techniques, the ABCDE method, empathy and difficult-person strategies, workplace triggers, leadership pillars, workplace climate tools, and emotional temperature checks. The collection also includes a final project in which learners identify their two largest emotional intelligence gaps, analyze real emotional episodes, and create a four-week development plan built around specific techniques, observable behavior changes, and measurable progress.
