A single working agent is a starting point; the real value comes from coordinated multi-agent workflows that do real work alongside a team. Most leaders lack practical experience orchestrating agents, connecting them to enterprise systems, and designing the handoffs and oversight that keep workflows safe. This course, Deploying and Orchestrating AI Agents, provides that experience. You will orchestrate multi-agent workflows in your own IBM watsonx Orchestrate free-trial instance, apply safety checkpoints, connect agents to enterprise tools and data through pre-built skills, and design human handoffs and escalation paths that preserve oversight, speed, and accountability. You will then build human-in-the-loop oversight proportional to risk and reversibility, including thresholds, cadences, and review queues. By course completion, you will have produced a Working, Supervised Multi-Agent Workflow with integration specifications, a workflow diagram showing handoffs and escalations, a complete oversight scheme, and a test report covering happy-path, edge-case, and exception scenarios.

Syllabus

  • Orchestrating Multi-Agent Workflows
    • In this opening module of the deployment phase, you will move from a single working agent to coordinated multi-agent workflows that do real work alongside your team. You will study the patterns by which agents pass work to each other, learn the common pitfalls such as runaway loops, ambiguous ownership, and silent failures, and build a coordinated two-agent workflow in a self-service IBM watsonx Orchestrate free-trial environment with checkpoints that preserve safety and observability. The work is hands-on at a manager’s level and stops short of software engineering.
  • Connecting Agents to Tools, Data, and People
    • In this module, you will learn how agents become useful by reaching into enterprise tools and data. At a manager’s level, you will study how watsonx Orchestrate connects agents to common systems, what a manager must specify versus what IT will deliver, and how to think about data quality, freshness, and access control without coding. You will also learn to decide when an agent should reach into a system versus ask a human. The labs have you connect your workflow to pre-built skills and write integration requirements for a third tool.
  • Handoffs and Coordination with Humans
    • In this module, you will focus on the seams between humans and agents. You will design handoff patterns that preserve oversight and keep work moving, build escalation paths that fire on the right signals, configure agents to surface uncertainty rather than hide it, and recognize and prevent the dropped-baton failures that plague hybrid teams. The labs have you extend your multi-agent workflow with human handoff points and escalation paths and run it through an exception test pack.
  • Human-in-the-Loop Oversight at the Team Level
    • In this module, you will turn a deployed workflow into a supervised one. You will go beyond the slogan of human-in-the-loop to design specific checkpoints proportional to task risk and reversibility, set confidence thresholds and review cadences that hold up under load, recognize over-oversight, under-oversight, and oversight fatigue as real failure modes, and plan how oversight will evolve as agents and the team mature. The labs have you design a complete oversight scheme with a six-month maturation plan for your workflow.
  • Cumulative Project and Course Wrap-Up
    • In this final module, you will assemble everything from Modules 1 through 4 into a cumulative project: a Working, Supervised Multi-Agent Workflow. The deliverable is a configured multi-agent workflow in your watsonx Orchestrate free-trial instance, an instructions document with integration specifications and a workflow diagram, a complete oversight scheme with a six-month maturation plan, and a test report with a manager’s reflection. The module closes with a wrap-up featuring an SME interview, a day-in-the-life view of an Agentic Team Lead, and a bridge into the governance work of Course 4.
