In healthcare IT support, protecting patient data is part of every ticket you touch. This course brings together cybersecurity, cloud security, and data privacy into a single compliance-aware block, because healthcare IT practitioners treat them as one unified mindset: protect the environment. Tailored for learners who have completed Advanced Tools & Communication in Healthcare Support (LC 4), it adds the essential compliance-aware handling of healthcare IT demands, with no prior security experience required. You'll learn to apply first-line containment steps for phishing or unauthorized access, verify baseline cloud security controls like MFA, and follow secure file-handling practices across Microsoft 365 and Azure workflows. You'll also practice collecting diagnostic logs safely, following documented HIPAA procedures and escalating anything outside your runbook immediately to the Compliance Officer. Tools covered include Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Defender for Office 365, Entra ID, OneDrive, SharePoint, Purview, and M365 admin center. By the end of the course, you'll be able to execute support tasks in ways that keep patient information safe and audit-ready.

Syllabus

  • Project Module: PHI-Safe Handling of a Complex Support Ticket
    • Work on a coordinated, complex PHI-involving support ticket end-to-end as a Tier 1 healthcare IT technician. The ticket comes from an emergency medicine physician who reports a suspected phishing incident with potential credential compromise, and who is also worried about shared clinical case files (containing PHI) that she was collaborating on last week. Your job is to run the correct containment, verification, audit, redaction, and escalation steps across all five LC 5 skill areas, including cybersecurity, cloud security, data security, information privacy, and HIPAA, so the specialized teams (Security Operations Center, Identity and Access Management Operations, HIPAA Privacy and Compliance Office) can act on clean, procedurally-complete information. This is the culminating LC 5 project: integrated compliance-and-security discipline under time pressure, with no autonomous judgment calls.
