(BL2) • Evaluate the role of communication, cybersecurity, and cloud computing technologies in enabling reliable, scalable, secure, and intelligent smart grid operation. (BL4) This course focuses on communication infrastructure, cybersecurity mechanisms, and cloud-enabled services required for modern smart grid implementation. It covers smart grid communication standards, advanced networking technologies, secure data exchange, privacy protection, cloud integration, and intelligent grid management practices used in contemporary power systems. The course also discusses practical aspects of smart grid communication networks, interoperability standards, cybersecurity challenges, AMI security, threat mitigation techniques, and cloud-based smart grid applications through conceptual discussions and practical case studies.   • Smart Grid Communication Technologies: Part-1
    • Let’s begin this module by understanding the communication technologies and infrastructure used in modern smart grid systems. The module discusses the communication requirements of smart grids, mapping smart grid applications to suitable communication technologies, and information exchange mechanisms between different smart grid domains. It also introduces communication pathway scenarios, smart grid communication standards, layered architecture of smart grid infrastructure, Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, TCP/IP model, and various smart grid communication networks used for reliable and secure data transmission in intelligent power systems.
  • Smart Grid Communication Technologies: Part-2
    • Let’s begin this module by understanding various wired and wireless communication technologies used in smart grid systems for reliable data transmission, monitoring, and control. The module discusses Ethernet communication, Power Line Communication (PLC), Fiber Optic Communication (FOC), Home Plug communication, and several wireless communication technologies such as WiMAX, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, 3G/4G/5G cellular networks, Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT), Satellite Communication, and Free Space Optical (FSO) communication. It also explains their working principles, characteristics, advantages, limitations, and applications in smart grid infrastructure.
  • Smart Grid Privacy and Security
    • Let’s begin this module by understanding the importance of privacy, cybersecurity, and resilience in smart grid communication systems. The module discusses various security challenges faced by smart grid communication networks, threat and risk assessment methodologies, and resilience mechanisms against physical attacks. It also introduces the key security functional blocks of smart grid reference architecture, endpoint security controls, and security schemes used in both public and private smart grid communication networks, including Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) security.
  • Cloud Services for Smart Grid
    • Let’s begin this module by understanding the role of cloud computing technologies and services in modern smart grid systems. The module covers the fundamentals of cloud computing, including cloud service models, deployment models, and cloud architecture designed for smart grid applications. It also discusses cloud-based solutions for demand response, load balancing, dynamic pricing policies, energy meter management, and virtual power plant operations through various practical case studies.
