This course is for learners and professionals who want to understand how artificial intelligence is governed and what compliance requires of organizations. You will begin by examining the current state of AI governance, including the U.S. executive-order approach, the gap between AI capability and public trust, and the sources of authority and standards used to build a governance framework. You will see why social license is central to sustainable AI through case studies on data centers and energy, the creative arts, and the Tay chatbot. You will then study two comprehensive approaches to governance: the EU AI Act, including its risk tiers, rules for general-purpose AI, enforcement, and global influence, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework with its govern, map, measure, and manage functions.

Syllabus

  • The Current State of AI Governance
    • You will learn where AI governance stands today, including the U.S. executive-order approach and the gap between AI capability and public trust. You will also learn about the sources of authority used to build a governance framework, such as regulations, contracts, laws, court decisions, internal policies, and industry practices, along with resources for tracking new developments. In addition, you will learn what standards do, the main types of standards, and who develops them, and why social license is central to sustainable AI, using case studies on data centers and energy, AI in the creative arts, and the Tay chatbot.
  • Module 2: Comprehensive Approaches to AI Governance
    • You will learn how holistic AI governance differs from targeted approaches, and how the EU AI Act was developed, defines AI, and is being implemented. You will also learn how the Act sorts AI systems into prohibited, high-risk, limited-risk, and minimal-risk tiers, what requirements apply to general-purpose AI models, how conformity assessment and enforcement work, and how the Act influences companies and countries worldwide. In addition, you will learn how the NIST AI Risk Management Framework uses the govern, map, measure, and manage functions, along with its supporting resources, to manage AI risk.
