Tax planning starts with a clear answer to a simple question: what changed, and does it matter? This course teaches you how to identify, analyze, and document routine tax planning drivers using year-over-year comparisons, materiality thresholds, and structured escalation summaries. You'll learn the core workflow of a CB1 (analyst-level) tax reviewer: comparing current-year and prior-year tax inputs, distinguishing meaningful drivers from normal fluctuation or data errors, and preparing concise driver summaries for senior review. The course covers practical techniques in Excel and ONESOURCE, including how to spot variances, apply threshold rules, and document findings clearly. By the end of this course, you'll be able to review tax schedules confidently, flag material items appropriately, and communicate findings without crossing into recommendation territory. These skills are essential for entry-level tax analysts supporting planning discussions and compliance workflows. Who this is for: Aspiring and early-career tax professionals who want to build practical skills in tax driver analysis. Basic spreadsheet familiarity is helpful.

Syllabus

  • The Tax Analyst's Role in Planning Driver Analysis
    • This module introduces what tax planning drivers are, explains the CB1 analyst role in surfacing drivers for senior review, and establishes the core "surface, threshold, summarize" framework you'll use throughout the course. You'll learn to define tax planning drivers in a year-over-year review context, recognize the boundary between identifying drivers and making recommendations, and understand the standard elements expected in a driver summary. Mastering these foundational concepts ensures your review work stays within professional boundaries while providing clear, actionable information to senior tax professionals.
  • Identifying Common Tax Planning Drivers in Schedules
    • This module covers the most common tax planning drivers found in tax schedules and workpapers—including timing differences, credit utilization, NOL usage, charitable carryforwards, and state apportionment shifts—and explains why each affects tax position, expense, or cash taxes. Using Microsoft Excel, you'll navigate prepared tax schedules, classify line items by driver category, and determine whether each should be documented, flagged for senior review, or escalated to a specialist. Recognizing these drivers quickly and accurately is essential for efficient tax review workflows that surface material issues without over-escalating routine fluctuations.
  • Year-Over-Year Comparison, ONESOURCE Review, and Materiality
    • This module teaches you how to perform year-over-year comparisons in Excel and ONESOURCE to identify material changes in tax-related line items, apply CB1 materiality thresholds consistently, and distinguish true planning drivers from data entry errors or normal business fluctuation. You'll generate and interpret comparative views, apply variance rules (greater than 25% and greater than $10,000), and document findings appropriately—including basic forward-impact notes for timing differences expected to reverse. These comparison and threshold-application skills are fundamental to producing reliable, well-supported tax review work that senior professionals can act on with confidence.
  • Module 4: Writing the One-Page Driver Summary
    • This module focuses on constructing a clear, concise one-page planning driver summary that communicates findings effectively for senior escalation, covering all required fields: driver, magnitude, direction, trigger, authority, options identified, and open items. You'll learn to use research support appropriately to identify governing authority without making recommendations, incorporate forward-impact notes where relevant, and avoid common documentation mistakes including tool misuse and role confusion. Strong driver summaries enable faster senior review and demonstrate the professional judgment that distinguishes effective tax analysts.
