This course introduces learners to the structure of U.S. corporate tax Form 1120 and shows how return amounts connect to workpapers, source documentation, and OneSource inputs. Using a synthetic example, learners walk through key sections of page 1, supporting income and deduction entries, the payments and credits areas, and the Schedule M-1 book-to-tax reconciliation. The course emphasizes traceability, tie-outs, prior-year comparison, and error identification so learners can review and defend a corporate return with confidence. Course Learning Objectives Explain the structure and purpose of major sections of Form 1120 Trace key return lines to workpapers, supporting schedules, and source documentation Navigate between form view and organizer inputs in OneSource for common corporate tax return entries Enter and validate major income, deduction, payment, and credit amounts using a structured return workflow Reconcile book income to taxable income through Schedule M-1 Compare current-year return amounts to the prior-year filed return and document significant variances Identify common return preparation and reconciliation errors and investigate non-zero tie-outs Apply a repeatable review approach to confirm that return amounts flow correctly across forms and schedules

Syllabus

  • Form 1120 as a Reconciliation Map
    • This module introduces Form 1120 as a connected return structure rather than a simple set of data-entry lines. Learners examine how amounts should trace from source support to workpapers to return lines, and how cross-references and tie-outs help confirm return accuracy. The module builds a review mindset focused on traceability, zero-difference tie-outs, and early identification of structural issues.
  • Entering Revenue and Cost of Goods Sold
    • This module focuses on the revenue section of Form 1120 page 1 and the flow of cost of goods sold into gross profit. Learners review how gross receipts, returns and allowances, net receipts, and COGS should be entered, computed, and validated in OneSource. The module emphasizes independent recomputation, support-based review, and confirmation that page 1 amounts flow correctly through the return.
  • Supporting Income, Deductions, Payments, and Credits
    • This module covers common supporting income items, major deduction categories, and the payments and credits areas of the corporate return. Learners practice mapping amounts to the correct Form 1120 lines, identifying likely OneSource input locations, and confirming that each item is supported and classified correctly. The module reinforces a structured workflow for reviewing how non-operating income, deductions, payments, and credits affect the overall return.
  • Schedule M-1 Reconciliation, Prior-Year Review, and Error Resolution
    • This module centers on Schedule M-1 book-to-tax reconciliation, prior-year comparison, and final error resolution. Learners review how book income is reconciled to taxable income, how to classify and document year-over-year variances, and how to investigate non-zero tie-outs caused by duplication, omission, or misclassification. The module concludes with a practical final review approach that helps confirm the return is structurally sound and ready for reviewer handoff.
