By the end of this course, learners will be able to set up accurate modeling references, construct foundational facial structures, refine detailed features, and complete full-body topology using 3ds Max. They will gain the ability to build eyes, noses, lips, cheeks, and ears with clean geometry, as well as design torso, hands, and waist with realistic proportions. This course benefits learners by guiding them step by step from the fundamentals of reference setup to the advanced techniques of body modeling. Each module introduces progressively detailed workflows, helping learners not only understand the tools but also apply professional modeling practices that ensure animation-ready geometry. What makes this course unique is its focus on modeling Shrek—a recognizable and expressive character—providing both familiarity and practical application. Through project-based learning, participants will master key modeling techniques while building confidence to tackle complex character designs in their own creative projects.

Syllabus

  • Foundations of Character Head Modeling
    • This module introduces the essential groundwork for character modeling in 3ds Max. Learners will explore the importance of reference images, setting up the modeling workspace, and developing the initial structure of the face. Through guided steps, they will learn how to model eyes, noses, lips, and cheeks while maintaining accurate proportions and clean topology for further refinement.
  • Detailing the Face and Expressions
    • This module focuses on adding complexity and refinement to the character’s facial features. Learners will develop advanced topology for the forehead, cheeks, and neck, while also exploring techniques for detailed eye editing, smile formation, and facial cuts. By the end of this module, they will be able to enhance realism and prepare the face for natural expressions and animation readiness.
  • Completing the Head and Body Structure
    • This module advances the character modeling process by completing facial refinements and extending into body structures. Learners will refine detailed facial regions such as the nose, lips, and ears, and progress to setting up body references, torso, hands, and waist modeling. This final stage ensures the character model has realistic anatomy and balanced geometry for further development.
