Third Cinema: Films of Resistance (Live Online)

via CourseHorse

Overview

According to Third Cinema innovators, First Cinema is the Hollywood model, and Second Cinema described European art films that elevated the director as auteur, and Third Cinema encouraged activism and collectivism, inviting the viewer to be an active creator of culture in a way that subverted mainstream filmmaking. With revolutionary roots, this anti-imperialist movement/theory influenced filmmakers of formerly colonized nations and was embraced by many excluded filmmakers and scholars in the West. Spanning narrative, documentary, and hybrid forms, the term is kept alive by scholars of post-colonial studies and filmmakers interested in decolonizing the form. Get an introduction to this important but often neglected approach from its inception in 1960's Latin America, to how the theory is applied today.

  • Origins and Context of Third Cinema
  • Third Cinema in Latin America, Africa, and Asia
