Are you ready to pick up a needle and thread for the very first time? Or do you have a sewing machine waiting to be used? Sewing 101 takes you back to the fundamentals, starting from the beginning and guiding you step by step through all the essential skills to make learning to sew an enjoyable and empowering experience for adults of all backgrounds.

This course is perfect for complete beginners and for those with previous sewing experience who need a refresher. You will develop competent skills operating a sewing machine and complete a finished garment, either a skirt or drawstring pants, working from a commercial pattern. This hands-on approach ensures you build confidence with every stitch.

During This Course You Will Learn

  • All necessary sewing terminology and the equipment you will use regularly in your projects

  • How to read and interpret commercial sewing patterns accurately

  • How to select the right fabric type for your chosen garment, whether a skirt or drawstring pants

  • How to construct a drawstring bag, a foundational project that teaches core techniques

  • How to properly install a waistband with professional finishing techniques

  • How to identify and work with fabric grain lines to ensure proper fit and drape

  • Over 6 different types of stitches and seam finishes using a sewing machine for varied applications

Prerequisites:

No prior sewing experience is required. This course welcomes absolute beginners.

Course Format Options:

We also offer this course as an intensive one-day bootcamp for those preferring concentrated learning. Check our bootcamp options if you would like to explore a full-day class experience.

Pricing and Format Details:

In-person classes cost 385 dollars for 12 hours of instruction total and do not include supplies. Virtual classes run 8 hours total and include all materials and supplies. Virtual students may choose to purchase with or without a sewing machine, depending on their needs and preferences.

Virtual Class Structure:

Virtual classes meet for 2 hours once per week over 4 weeks, totaling 8 hours of instruction. You will complete a denim tote bag and either a skirt or elastic waist pants, depending on which class option you select. When browsing available sections, class titles will specify either "Virtual Skirt Class" or "Virtual Pants Class" so you can choose your preferred project during registration.

Virtual Supplies and Materials:

All supplies are included throughout the course duration and will be shipped upon your enrollment. Patterns are available in sizes S, M, and L. Please let us know if you would like a plus-size pattern option, as we maintain those as well. All class sessions will be recorded and made available for students to review after each class for practice and reinforcement of techniques.

Virtual Class Recordings:

All virtual sessions are recorded and available to enrolled students. If you miss a class or wish to practice at home, you may request the recording to review at your convenience. Recordings are available only to students registered for the specific class, and only the instructor will be recorded.

Important Note:

A sewing machine is not included in the course cost. Virtual students may optionally purchase machine access or bring their own.
