Overview

Pro Tools Fundamentals I (PT101) is an introductory course that covers essential Pro Tools concepts, principles, and workflows needed to successfully execute professional audio production projects, from initial session setup through final mixing and mastering stages. This course provides hands-on instruction in building comprehensive sessions that incorporate multi-track recordings of live audio, MIDI sequences, and virtual instruments. Practical exercises and real-world projects teach core competencies in session creation, audio and MIDI recording and importing, editing and manipulation of session media, session navigation and track arrangement, and application of fundamental processing and mixing techniques to achieve polished productions. The course materials include downloadable media files and completed Pro Tools sessions that accompany all exercises and projects presented in the curriculum. In conjunction with Pro Tools Fundamentals II (PT110), the second course in this series, this course establishes the essential foundational knowledge required to prepare successfully for the Avid Certified User: Pro Tools certification examination.

Target Audience: This course is created for both individuals new to Pro Tools as well as experienced users who seek to develop a comprehensive and solid understanding of the software platform.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Create and configure Pro Tools session documents or cloud-enabled projects with appropriate parameter settings and specifications
  • Execute common audio production tasks using appropriate techniques and workflows
  • Apply effective navigation and editing strategies within multi-track Pro Tools environments
  • Integrate proper recording and mixing methodologies for both audio and MIDI content within the Pro Tools system
  • Evaluate and interpret the structure and organization of session files and projects
  • Identify and navigate the user interface components, tools, and functional elements

Prerequisites and Recommendations:

  • No prior experience with Avid Pro Tools is required to succeed in this course.
  • A practical working knowledge of either Windows or Mac operating systems is recommended.
  • Foundational knowledge of audio recording and digital audio workstation fundamentals is beneficial, including familiarity with microphone types and selection, understanding of audio and MIDI recording methodologies, knowledge of fundamental multi-track mixing principles such as level adjustment and panning techniques, and general experience with digital audio equipment, including MIDI controllers and audio interface devices.
