Gaining a basic understanding of music theory can help you learn tunes faster and become comfortable with arranging and accompanying songs and improvising variations. This intro course assumes no background in theory or reading music. We'll approach the topic in a way that makes sense for students interested in Irish traditional music, with equal time for grasping concepts by ear and in notation. Types of modes and scales often used in Irish music will be discussed, as will common rhythmic meters and patterns.
Students are encouraged (but not required) to have an instrument nearby during class in case they want to try out ideas as they're introduced. Music staff paper will also come in handy.
