Overview

This comprehensive two-day training program is structured around completing a production sequence that you will own upon completion. You will progress through the entire project workflow from initial stages through final output, examining not only the technical aspects of DaVinci Resolve but also implementing professional colorist methodologies and best practices. You will retain both the completed project and selected still images, providing you with valuable reference materials for continued learning.

Detailed Topics and Techniques You'll Learn:

  • Beginning with the dailies workflow. Establishing a consistent color grade from RAW camera original files for editorial use
  • Developing and creating custom LUTs, exporting LUTs, and customized looks
  • Rendering ProRes or DNxHD for offline editing workflows, H264 for web distribution
  • Importing XML and AAF project files from Premiere Pro and executing successful round-trip workflows
  • Conforming ProRes media in Resolve using imported XML data; troubleshooting and addressing non-matching conform issues
  • Integrating audio files in WAV format and comparing your conform against the offline reference
  • Transitioning from proxies to native RAW camera files for final grading
  • Analyzing conform versus bake methodology and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each approach
  • Determining the optimal approach and starting point for your comprehensive color grade
  • Implementing primary color correction. Working with three-way color corrector tools, curves, and LOG color grading
  • Developing and previewing custom looks throughout your timeline using the split-screen preview feature
  • Evaluating plugin effects and determining their role in professional colorist workflows
  • Executing advanced secondary grading, including keying techniques, window tracking, and animated adjustments
  • Integrating VFX elements and specialized visual effects into your timeline
  • Correcting audio issues and applying optical flow techniques for motion correction
  • Utilizing advanced RGB node capabilities for precise color control
  • Using external matte resources and understanding how they enhance your workflows
  • Final render output to 709 color space and DCP specifications for distribution

Each participant receives their own dedicated workstation for hands-on practice throughout the training.
