Explore the detailed anatomy of the human knee and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) through real human cadaver dissections in this 16-minute educational video from the Institute of Human Anatomy. Discover the function of knee ligaments including the MCL, LCL, ACL, and PCL, while learning how ACL tears occur and how this crucial ligament prevents injury through controlling anterior translation and internal rotation. The dissection clearly demonstrates what a working ACL looks like compared to a torn one, explains the differences between contact and non-contact injuries, and reviews treatment options including surgical reconstruction using autografts (hamstring or patellar tendon) and allografts (cadaver ligaments). The video also covers preventative strategies through neuromuscular training and proper strength balancing to reduce ACL tear risk, making it valuable for medical students, athletes, and anyone interested in understanding knee injuries.
