Learn about the physics of welding processes. The course is divided in seven parts. It will cover the entire spectrum of welding processes that are commonly used for engineering applications.

It begins with a general survey and classification of welding processes based on various methodologies with discussions on heat source and the principles behind heat generation. There will be discussions on the most widely used arc welding process and the physics behind Arc. What is arc and how is heat generated in Arc? What are the reactions in an arc? The course will further move to discuss the processes such as gas tungsten arc welding, the physics and the application of such a process and parameters that would affect the stability of these process.

The course will proceed with discussions about consumable welding processes with its focus on Gas Metal Arc Welding and the variants of this process. Learners will also see how the process characteristics change the metal transfer characteristics and its behaviour. The course will talk about Laser and Electron Beam Welding and end with solid state welding processes such as friction welding, ultrasonic welding and explosive welding, which does not involve melting

Welding processes are fundamental manufacturing techniques used to permanently join materials, mainly metals and thermoplastics, by applying heat, pressure, or both. They play a crucial role in industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, and power plants. Among the most widely used welding methods are arc welding processes like Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG). These processes differ in terms of electrode type, shielding method, cost, skill requirement, and quality of weld produced.
SMAW is simple and economical, suitable for fieldwork and thick sections, but it produces slag and requires post-weld cleaning. GMAW offers higher productivity and is widely used in automated and semi-automated applications. GTAW provides superior weld quality and precision, especially for thin materials and non-ferrous metals, though it requires higher skill and is relatively slower.
Other advanced methods such as resistance welding and laser beam welding are used in mass production and high-precision applications. Overall, welding processes are indispensable in modern engineering due to their strength, reliability, and adaptability. Proper selection of a welding process depends on material type, thickness, joint design, required strength, and economic considerations

What challenged me was a muster Question, What welding the whole class gave relevant but not peicise at the end of the day we got we got there answer that gave us a clearity. Types of welding also cos something we do work without understand the deep content of our work which gave a better understanding of what we are doing. Great work! From this lab, I learned everything I now know about machines and machining. I came into this class with no knowledge on the subject so I was able to learn a lot. I learned how to drill holes with machines, I learned to center drill and why it’s important to center drill. I learned the importance of cutting fluid and what happens if none or not enough is used. I also learned that it is imperative to be precise in everything that you do because, it will pay off in the long run. Some problems that I ran into were: not being familiar with the machinery and my original measurements being off. I actually had to redo my base because my axel holes were too close to the top of the base and were not able to be drilled. However, the problems I did have …show more content…
We learned why welding is used, the proper welding safety, and a brief history of welding. The main purpose of this lab was to familiarize students with welding and actually teach them how and why welding is used. As stated in the manual, the primary objective of any welding operation is to produce a weld that has the same properties as the base metal. The types of welding that we learned are: Electric Arc welding, Oxyacetylene Brazing, and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Electric Arc welding is the simplest type that we learned. It is also the least strong weld and definitely not as reliable as the other types.
