Discover the French chemist Antoine François Fourcroy's perspective on pharmacy's subordinate position to chemistry, and how British doctors like Anthony Todd Thomson supported this view. Understand the significant impact of the 1852 Pharmacy Act, which created a statutory register of pharmaceutical chemists, and how subsequent legislation, including the 1858 Medical Act and 1868 Pharmacy and Poisons Act, shaped the professional boundaries and protected titles within the field.

I understand that pharmacy in Britain has evolved over time. Earlier, it was closely linked with chemistry because pharmacists mainly prepared and dispensed medicines. However, in modern practice, pharmacy is more connected to medicine and patient care.

Today, pharmacists are not just involved in making drugs but also in ensuring safe and effective use of medicines for patients. They play an important role in healthcare teams, especially in managing conditions like Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and other chronic diseases.

So, I feel pharmacy is now more of a healthcare profession rather than only a branch of chemistry, although chemistry still forms its scientific foundation.
