This seminar talk explores the relationship between topological data and geometric information in end-periodic mapping tori. Join Brandis Whitfield from Temple University as she presents research on short curves in end-periodic mapping tori of infinite-type surfaces. Learn how subsurface projections between "positive" and "negative" Handel-Miller laminations provide bounds for geodesic lengths of subsurface boundaries within these mapping tori. The presentation covers motivating theory for finite-type surfaces and closed fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds, demonstrates how these techniques extend to infinite-type settings, and explains how the main theorems yield results applicable to closed, fibered contexts. This Joint IAS/Princeton University Groups and Dynamics Seminar takes place at Simonyi 101 on April 8, 2025, at 4:30pm.
