Explore a conference presentation that introduces MegaStation, an innovative system designed to address the computational challenges of massive MIMO baseband processing in virtualized radio access networks (vRAN). Learn how researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison tackle the unprecedented computational demands posed by the rising deployment of massive MIMO technology and the widespread adoption of vRAN by leveraging single-node supercomputers as a promising hardware substrate. Discover the key technical challenges stemming from the mismatch between diverse execution granularities and incongruent parallel degrees of different processing pipeline stages versus the underlying evolving irregular hardware parallelism at runtime. Understand the application-platform co-designed approach that effectively harnesses single-node supercomputer computing power through dynamic adjustment of execution granularity and real-time reconstruction of the baseband processing pipeline based on monitored hardware parallelism status. Examine how MegaStation models the single-node supercomputer as a tightly coupled microprocessor and employs a scoreboarding-like algorithm inspired by dynamic instruction scheduling to orchestrate baseband processing instructions over GPU-instantiated executors. Review comprehensive evaluation results using the GigaIO FabreX platform demonstrating up to 66.2% lower tail frame processing latency and 4× higher throughput compared to state-of-the-art solutions, establishing MegaStation as a scalable and adaptive solution capable of meeting current vRAN requirements.
