This lecture introduces the mathematical foundations of pattern formation in biology, focusing on reaction-diffusion models pioneered by Alan Turing. Learn how these models describe the interaction of two or more chemicals (morphogens) that diffuse through space and react with each other to create patterns. Dr. Ruth Baker explains how to analyze reaction-diffusion models to understand the conditions necessary for pattern formation and the types of patterns that can emerge on domains of different sizes and shapes. This 21-minute video is the first in a three-part series of Oxford Mathematics third-year lectures on mathematical biology. After viewing this lecture, Oxford students typically attend classes to further discuss the material and associated problem sets, similar to the tutorial system used for first and second-year courses.
