How the Brunton Compass Allows Us to Understand the World

The presentation was made by the Brunton owner which was very colloquial in nature and focused largely on the Brunton company and the evolution of the Brunton Axis geological compass. The presentation spent only a brief interval of time in discussing the use of a Brunton pocket transit for geological measurements in the field. There was a brief overview on its use in measuring strike, dip, trend and plunge of geological structures at outcrops and touched only briefly on stratigraphic thickness measurement using a Brunton pocket transit on a Jacob's Staff but didn't really discuss how it was done. As well there was no discussion on its use as a transit in determining slope gradients, basic levelling for elevation determination change by using a range pole or levelling rod,use of the mirror feature and sighting, and other rapid "down and dirty" field surveying applications including orienteering and use with topographic maps for which I have used it and for which it is really well suited. A discussion on coordination of GPS coordinates with geological measurements for geological mapping purposes would also have been a nice touch for introducing especially new users to the versatility and utility of the pocket transit in field applications. So generally then it was a very brief, non-technical presentation oriented toward the company and product evolution rather than about its use and utility in geological mapping in the field. For any experienced users of the Brunton pocket transit there isn't much to be gained in this presentation.
