Hatchery Management - Water Quality

I recently completed this online lecture on water quality parameters, and I found it to be an excellent introduction to how physical and chemical properties of water influence the success of aquaculture systems — especially hatcheries. The course does a great job of showing why water quality is such a vital component of healthy fish production and how even small changes in temperature, oxygen, or pollutants can make a big difference.

What I Learned

I appreciated how each concept was explained in a way that links directly to its effect on fish growth and survival.

Temperature is presented as a major control factor in aquatic systems. The instructor explains how it affects everything from metabolism and spawning to disease resistance. One interesting point was the inverse relationship between temperature and gas solubility (hotter water holds less oxygen), and the direct relationship with chemical solubility (higher temperatures can increase the toxicity of chemicals).

3. Dissolved Oxygen and Toxic Gases
I found the section on dissolved oxygen particularly helpful. The course explains that maintaining at least 5.0 ppm of DO is essential for fish health, and it introduces different aeration and circulation methods to achieve that.
