Explore the complete natural history of dinosaurs through this comprehensive university-level geology course that covers fundamental paleontological sciences and dinosaur evolution. Begin with essential scientific foundations including sedimentology, geochronology, fossilization processes, anatomy, evolution, and taxonomic classification systems necessary for understanding dinosaur paleontology. Delve into the historical development of paleontology from ancient times through modern discoveries, examining how scientists uncover and interpret fossil evidence. Master the principles of deep time, geological dating methods, and plate tectonics while learning proper fossil collection and museum preparation techniques. Study dinosaur osteology in detail, focusing on skeletal anatomy, pelvic structures, and limb configurations that define different dinosaur groups. Investigate evolutionary theory, phylogenetic relationships, and the tree of life to understand how dinosaurs fit into the broader context of vertebrate evolution. Trace the rise of reptiles during the Triassic period and examine the environmental conditions that led to dinosaur dominance. Explore each major dinosaur group systematically, including the heavily armored Thyreophora, the diverse herbivorous Ornithopoda with their specialized beaks and crests, the thick-skulled Marginocephalia, the massive long-necked Sauropodomorpha, and the carnivorous Theropoda ranging from giant tyrannosaurs to feathered maniraptors. Discover how dinosaurs evolved flight capabilities and examine the transition from non-avian dinosaurs to modern birds. Analyze dinosaur behavior, social structures, reproduction, and parenting strategies as revealed through fossil evidence. Investigate dinosaur physiology including metabolism, cardiovascular systems, respiratory adaptations, and the ongoing debate over warm-blooded versus cold-blooded dinosaurs. Study the diverse Mesozoic ecosystems including marine reptiles, pterosaurs, and early mammals that coexisted with dinosaurs. Examine the catastrophic K/Pg extinction event that ended the Age of Dinosaurs 66 million years ago, exploring multiple theories and evidence for this mass extinction. Conclude with the legacy of dinosaurs in modern ecosystems through their bird descendants and the ethical considerations surrounding paleontological research and fossil collection.

Absolutely loved this course. Watched it and rewatched it and watched it again. Great introduction to basic physiology, evolution, fossil collection/paleoethics, cladistics and geology all while talkin' about dinosaurs. If you like dinosaurs but are new to science, this is a perfect class. It's funny, accessible and has amazing little anecdotes throughout — for instance, Sir Richard Owen predicting Moas based on a single bone. I was looking for study materials when I came across this website, and saw that it didn't have any reviews! Excellent class, even for a non-student like me.
