Concrete Technology is acquiring tremendous significance as we continue to use more concrete in diverse conditions. A concrete engineer needs to update the understanding of concrete as a material, be aware of the developments of special concretes, be conscious of the limitations of existing test methods and specifications, understand the issues in shifting to a more performance-based thinking, and know about maintenance and repair in the overall lifecycle of concrete.

Keeping these in mind, this course aims at:

Revising the basic principles underlying concrete science and technology
Developing a framework, which helps us understand the present-day scenario in concrete engineering
Going through some issues in special and high-performance concretes and their quality control and testing, including performance-based thinking, durability and maintenance

After completing the Concrete Technology course, I feel more confident in my understanding of one of the most essential materials used in civil engineering – concrete. This subject covered both the theoretical and practical aspects needed to work with concrete in real-world construction.

During the course, I learned about the properties of cement, fine and coarse aggregates, and how water-cement ratio affects the strength and durability of concrete. Special concretes like high-strength, fiber-reinforced, and self-compacting concrete were also introduced, giving us insights into modern construction methods.

The most useful part of this course was the mix design process. Though it involved calculations, it taught me how to proportion ingredients based on structural requirements. I also understood the importance of proper curing, compaction, and testing in ensuring long-term durability.

The laboratory sessions were very helpful in applying the concepts we studied. Experiments like slump test, compaction factor test, and compressive strength test gave us hands-on experience and made the subject more engaging.

Overall, this course gave me a strong foundation in construction materials and helped me realize the importance of quality control in concrete works. It is a vital subject for every aspiring civil engineer and will definitely help me in my future career.
